Problem Understanding

We are given k game levels. Each level is an n × m grid of characters. A level can be transmitted in two different ways.

The first option is to send the entire grid from scratch. Since every cell must be transmitted, the cost is n * m.

The second option is to send only the differences relative to some level that has already been transmitted. If two levels differ in d cells, the cost becomes d * w.

The order of transmission is not fixed. We may choose any level to send first, and every later level may either be built from scratch or reconstructed from one previously transmitted level.

The output requires two things. First, the minimum possible total transmission cost. Second, an actual transmission plan. For every level we must specify either that it was sent from scratch (parent = 0) or that it was reconstructed from a previously transmitted level.

The constraints reveal the intended direction. Each level contains at most 10 × 10 = 100 cells. There can be up to 1000 levels. Computing the difference between two levels costs at most 100 character comparisons, so all pairwise distances can be computed in about 1000² × 100 = 10^8 operations in the worst case. That is large but still manageable in optimized C++ and accepted for this problem. Once the pairwise costs are known, we need a graph algorithm on only 1000 vertices.

The subtle part is that transmitting a level from scratch is always allowed. A common mistake is to think every level must be connected to another level. Consider:

Another easy mistake is forgetting that a transformation is useful only when it is cheaper than rebuilding. Suppose:

A third pitfall concerns transmission order. If level 3 is reconstructed from level 1, then level 1 must appear earlier in the output. Any valid solution must produce an ordering consistent with the chosen dependencies.

Approaches

A brute-force view is to think directly about transmission orders and parent choices. For every level we could decide whether it is sent from scratch or derived from another level, while also respecting the requirement that parents appear earlier in the transmission sequence.

This is clearly correct because every valid transmission strategy can be described by such decisions. Unfortunately, the number of possibilities grows exponentially with k, making it completely infeasible even for a few dozen levels.

The key observation is that the problem is secretly a graph problem.

Create one vertex for every level. Also create an extra virtual vertex representing "build from scratch". Let this vertex be numbered 0.

Connecting level i directly to vertex 0 means transmitting level i from scratch. The cost of such an edge is always n * m.

For every pair of levels i and j, compute how many cells differ. Reconstructing one from the other costs

difference(i, j) * w.

This becomes the weight of an edge between i and j.

Now consider any valid transmission strategy. Every level either comes from scratch or from exactly one previous level. That means every level chooses exactly one parent. The resulting structure is a tree rooted at vertex 0.

Conversely, any tree rooted at vertex 0 describes a valid transmission strategy. A level connected directly to 0 is sent from scratch. A level connected to another level is reconstructed from it.

The total transmission cost is exactly the sum of edge weights in this tree.

The problem has been transformed into finding the minimum-cost tree connecting all vertices, which is precisely a Minimum Spanning Tree.

Once the MST is found, we root it at vertex 0 and output the parent of every level in a DFS or BFS order.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Read all k levels and store their grids.
  2. Create a graph with vertices 0...k, where vertex 0 is the virtual "build from scratch" node.
  3. For every level i, add an edge (0, i) with weight n * m.

This edge represents transmitting level i directly. 4. For every pair of levels (i, j), count how many cells differ.

Multiply this count by w to obtain the transformation cost. 5. Add an edge between i and j with that cost. 6. Run Kruskal's algorithm on all edges.

Why it works

Every valid transmission plan gives each level exactly one source, either the virtual root or another level. That structure is a connected acyclic graph spanning all vertices, hence a spanning tree rooted at vertex 0.

The cost of the transmission plan equals the sum of the chosen edge weights.

Conversely, every spanning tree rooted at vertex 0 defines a valid transmission plan. An edge to vertex 0 means sending a level from scratch, while an edge between two levels means transmitting their difference.

Since there is a one-to-one correspondence between valid transmission plans and spanning trees of this graph, minimizing transmission cost is exactly the Minimum Spanning Tree problem. Kruskal's algorithm returns a spanning tree of minimum total weight, so the produced transmission plan is optimal.

The first part reads and stores every level. Since each grid contains at most 100 cells, comparing two levels is cheap.

The graph construction mirrors the transmission rules exactly. Edges from the virtual root represent rebuilding from scratch. Edges between levels represent transmitting differences.

Kruskal's algorithm is a natural fit because the graph is dense. There are roughly k² / 2 edges, and Kruskal only requires sorting them once and then performing nearly constant-time DSU operations.

After constructing the MST, the graph is converted into an adjacency list. A DFS rooted at vertex 0 determines the parent relationship required by the output format. Because a tree has exactly one path from the root to every vertex, the chosen parent is unambiguous.

One subtle detail is that MST edges are undirected. The DFS orientation determines which endpoint becomes the parent in the transmission plan. Since every vertex is reachable from the root, the resulting ordering always satisfies the requirement that a parent is transmitted before its children.
