A brute-force viewpoint is to treat this as a graph coloring problem with four colors. Each uncolored vertex may receive one of four values, and we must satisfy all edge constraints.

Even for a $10 \times 10$ grid this becomes hopeless. One hundred vertices would already give $4^{100}$ possible assignments. Standard backtracking or constraint propagation cannot handle grids containing up to one million vertices.

The breakthrough comes from studying one unit square. Its four corners are all pairwise connected. The square contains the four side edges and the two diagonals, so those four vertices form a complete graph $K_4$.

A $K_4$ requires four distinct colors.

Consider the parity of a vertex position:

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Number the four parity classes:

using the value (row % 2) * 2 + (col % 2). 2. Enumerate all 24 permutations of colors 1,2,3,4. 3. For a chosen permutation, interpret it as the color assigned to each parity class. 4. Scan every cell that already contains a color.

If all pre-colored cells agree with the permutation, keep this permutation and stop searching. 6. If no permutation survives, print 0. 7. Otherwise construct the answer grid.

For every position, compute its parity class and output the color assigned by the chosen permutation.

Why it works

Every $2 \times 2$ square induces a $K_4$, so its four corners must receive four distinct colors. The four parity classes appear exactly once inside every $2 \times 2$ square. Consequently each parity class must always receive a fixed color throughout the grid.

Any valid coloring is therefore exactly a permutation of colors assigned to the four parity classes. The algorithm checks all such permutations. If one satisfies every pre-colored vertex, the resulting coloring is valid everywhere because every square contains the four parity classes once each, hence all four colors once each. If no permutation satisfies the given cells, no valid coloring exists.

The core observation is encoded by cls = (i & 1) * 2 + (j & 1), which identifies one of the four parity classes. Every valid coloring must assign one fixed color to each class.

The loop over permutations("1234") tries all 24 possible assignments. For every pre-colored cell, we check whether the permutation predicts exactly the given color. A single mismatch rejects that permutation immediately.

Once a valid permutation is found, constructing the answer is straightforward. Every cell receives the color corresponding to its parity class.

A common implementation mistake is mixing up the parity-class numbering between the checking phase and the construction phase. Both must use exactly the same formula.
