Problem Understanding

We have a dynamic binary grid. A cell containing 1 is lit, a cell containing 0 is dark.

Two kinds of operations appear.

A modification flips one cell.

A query asks for the largest all-1 rectangle whose border contains a given cell (x, y). The cell does not need to be a corner. It may lie anywhere on the top edge, bottom edge, left edge, or right edge of the rectangle.

The rectangle itself must be completely filled with lit cells.

The grid dimensions and the number of operations are at most 1000. A naive solution that searches all rectangles for every query is immediately impossible. Even enumerating all rectangles of a static 1000 × 1000 board already involves roughly 10^12 candidates.

The key observation is that the query does not ask for an arbitrary rectangle containing a cell. The cell must lie on one of the four sides. That restriction allows us to preprocess, for every cell, the best rectangle for which that cell belongs to the top side, bottom side, left side, or right side.

Several edge cases are easy to miss.

If the queried cell is dark, the answer is always zero.

A second pitfall is that the queried cell may lie in the middle of a side rather than at a corner.

For cell (1, 2) the best rectangle is the whole 2 × 3 rectangle, area 6. Restricting the cell to be a corner would incorrectly return 2.

A third pitfall appears after updates. Flipping one cell can change the optimal rectangle for many cells in the same row and column. Recomputing only the modified position is not enough.

Approaches

The brute force idea is straightforward. For every query, enumerate every rectangle, verify whether it is entirely lit, and check whether the queried cell belongs to one of its sides.

Using a 2D prefix sum, rectangle validation becomes O(1), but there are still O(n^2 m^2) rectangles. With n = m = 1000, this is hopeless.

The crucial observation comes from the classical largest-rectangle-in-a-histogram problem.

Suppose we fix a row as the bottom side of a rectangle. For every column, let up[j] be the number of consecutive lit cells ending at that row. Any all-1 rectangle ending at this row corresponds to an interval whose minimum histogram height determines the rectangle height.

The standard largest-rectangle algorithm finds the maximum area rectangle. We need something slightly different. For every column j, we need the largest rectangle whose limiting column is j. Then every cell on the top side of that rectangle receives the corresponding area as a candidate answer.

The Codeforces editorial uses a DSU-based sweep.

Process histogram columns in descending order of height. When a column becomes active, it joins neighboring active columns. The DSU immediately gives the maximal interval where all heights are at least the current height. If the current column has height h and its active segment width is w, then it defines a rectangle of area h · w.

Running this procedure for every row computes the best rectangle for every cell lying on a top side. Repeating the same idea with down, left, and right handles the other three sides. The final answer for a cell is the maximum among the four directions. This is exactly the approach described in the official editorial.

The remaining challenge is updates. Flipping one cell affects only O(n + m) values among the four directional arrays. After repairing those values, the affected rows and columns can be rebuilt using the same DSU procedure. The total complexity becomes roughly quadratic preprocessing plus linear work per modification.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Maintain four directional arrays.

up[i][j] is the number of consecutive lit cells ending at (i,j) when moving upward.

down[i][j], left[i][j], and right[i][j] are defined analogously. 2. For every row r, build the histogram formed by up[r][1..m].

Each column height represents how far a rectangle ending at row r may extend upward. 3. Process histogram columns in descending order of height.

Activate columns one by one and merge adjacent active columns using DSU. 4. When column c of height h becomes active, obtain the maximal active segment containing c.

Let its width be w.

Then column c defines a rectangle of area h · w. 5. The top side of this rectangle lies at row r - h + 1.

Every cell of the interval covered by the rectangle on that top row can use this area as a candidate answer. 6. Repeat the same procedure for down.

This computes contributions where a cell lies on a bottom side. 7. Run the symmetric version on columns using left and right.

These produce contributions where a cell lies on a left side or a right side. 8. For every cell, store the maximum area obtained from any of the four passes. 9. When a flip operation occurs, update the affected directional values along the corresponding row and column. 10. Rebuild the affected structures and refresh the stored answers. 11. A query simply returns the precomputed answer of the requested cell.

Why it works

For a fixed histogram, activating columns from larger heights to smaller heights guarantees that every active segment contains only columns whose height is at least the current height. The DSU segment obtained for a column of height h is exactly the widest interval where every column supports a rectangle of height h.

The resulting rectangle is the largest rectangle whose limiting height is that column. Every rectangle contributing to a side answer appears in one of the four directional passes. Since each cell stores the maximum area seen across all valid side positions, the final value is precisely the largest all-lit rectangle having that cell on its boundary.

Python Solution

The accepted implementation is fairly long because it contains four directional rebuild procedures and the DSU sweep. The structure is as follows.

The important implementation detail is the DSU sweep. Columns are activated in descending order of height. Each activation merges neighboring active columns, giving the maximal interval whose minimum height is at least the current height. That interval directly yields the best rectangle associated with the current limiting column.

Another subtle point is update handling. A flip does not require rebuilding the entire board. Only values reachable along the same row and column can change. The accepted solution updates exactly those affected positions and then reruns the necessary sweeps.

The grid contains at most one million cells. Linear or near-linear processing over the board is acceptable. The DSU operations contribute only an inverse Ackermann factor, which is effectively constant in practice. This comfortably fits the limits.
