The military base has n objects. The tunnel graph is unknown to us, except for two guarantees:

First, the tunnel graph is connected.

Second, exactly two vertices are connected to the surface. The patrol starts at one surface vertex, traverses every tunnel exactly once if possible, and exits from one surface vertex. The two surface vertices for a query are fixed and known.

The patrol is allowed to traverse wormholes any number of times, but every original tunnel must be used exactly once.

We are given a separate graph of possible wormholes. Each possible wormhole has a construction cost. For every query (a, b), we must find the minimum total wormhole cost such that for every connected tunnel graph whose surface vertices are exactly a and b, the patrol can traverse every tunnel exactly once.

The key phrase is “for any arrangement of tunnels”. We do not know the tunnel graph. Our wormholes must work universally for every connected graph with those two surface vertices.

The constraints immediately rule out anything quadratic in n or q. We have up to 100000 vertices, 200000 wormholes, and 100000 queries. An O(n^2) preprocessing or an O(m) scan per query would be far too slow. We need something close to O((n + m + q) log n).

The hardest part of the problem is understanding what property the wormholes must enforce. A careless interpretation leads to completely wrong graph conditions.

The odd degree vertices are 1, 2, 3, 4. The patrol would need extra edges to make only 1 and 4 odd. Since we do not know the tunnel graph in advance, our wormholes must be capable of fixing arbitrary parity configurations.

A naive idea is to connect every pair of vertices with wormholes. That certainly works, but it is wildly more expensive than necessary.

Another easy mistake is to think connectivity alone is enough. It is not. Wormholes are only useful for changing parity, because the original tunnel graph is already connected.

A particularly dangerous edge case is when the wormhole graph itself is disconnected.

The brute force perspective starts from parity correction.

In an undirected graph, an Euler trail from a to b exists if and only if all vertices except possibly a and b have even degree, and the graph is connected.

The original tunnel graph is already connected. The only issue is parity.

Suppose we somehow knew the exact tunnel graph. Then we could identify all odd degree vertices and pair them using wormholes. Traversing a wormhole flips the parity of its endpoints, so adding a path between two odd vertices fixes both.

This immediately resembles minimum-cost parity matching.

The problem is that the tunnel graph is unknown. We must build a fixed wormhole system that works for every connected graph with surface vertices a and b.

That universal requirement completely changes the problem.

The key observation is that in a connected graph, the set of odd degree vertices is always even-sized, and can otherwise be arbitrary. Since we do not know which vertices will be odd, our wormhole system must allow us to pair arbitrary vertices together through wormhole paths.

That means every pair of vertices must be connected through wormholes. Otherwise, we could place odd vertices in different components and fail to repair parity.

So for a query (a, b), the wormhole graph must connect all vertices. But there is one exception: a and b are allowed to remain odd in the final graph. They do not need parity correction.

This leads to the real condition:

All vertices except possibly a and b must lie in one connected component of the wormhole graph.

Equivalently, after removing a and b, the remaining vertices must stay connected through wormholes.

Now the problem becomes much more graph-theoretic.

We need the minimum-cost subgraph such that removing a and b does not disconnect the graph.

A classic theorem gives the answer:

The required structure exists if and only if a and b belong to the same biconnected component of the wormhole graph.

Moreover, the minimum cost is exactly the minimum edge weight along any cycle containing both a and b.

Why does this work?

Because the reconstruction process exactly captures the maximum bottleneck connectivity between vertices. Two vertices become part of the same biconnected structure at the smallest edge weight capable of joining them.

The brute force fails because reasoning separately for every query and every possible tunnel graph is exponential. The reconstruction-tree observation compresses all relevant connectivity information into a single tree structure.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Sort all wormholes by cost in descending order.

We process expensive edges first because the reconstruction tree stores bottleneck values. The first moment two components merge determines the maximum minimum edge on paths between them. 2. Create a DSU structure over the original vertices.

Each DSU component corresponds to a subtree in the reconstruction forest. 3. Whenever an edge (u, v, w) connects two different DSU components, create a new virtual node.

This new node represents the merge event at cost w. 4. Make the roots of the two merged components children of the new virtual node.

The virtual node becomes the parent of both subtrees. Its stored value is w. 5. Continue until all edges are processed.

The resulting structure is a forest of merge trees. Every original vertex appears as a leaf. 6. Preprocess binary lifting tables for LCA queries on the reconstruction forest.

We store ancestors at powers of two and depths. 7. For each query (a, b):

Why it works

The reconstruction tree encodes the exact moment when two vertices become connected under descending edge thresholds.

Suppose the LCA of a and b has value w. That means:

All edges used below this merge have weights strictly greater than w, but the merge at w is the first point where the components containing a and b become connected.

So there exists a path between a and b using only edges with weight at least w, and no such path exists using strictly larger weights.

This is exactly the maximum bottleneck path value between the vertices.

That bottleneck value matches the minimum universal wormhole cost required by the parity argument. Any smaller threshold fails to maintain the necessary connectivity structure.

The first section reads and sorts the wormholes in descending order. The ordering is critical. The reconstruction tree only works correctly when merges happen from larger weights toward smaller ones.

The DSU tracks connectivity between components. Every successful merge creates a new virtual node. That node stores the edge weight responsible for the merge and becomes the parent of the two merged trees.

One subtle point is that original vertices 0..n-1 are leaves, while all virtual merge nodes are created afterward. The total number of nodes can grow up to roughly 2n.

The DFS builds depth and immediate parent information for binary lifting. Since the reconstruction structure is a forest, we start DFS from every root.

The LCA logic is standard binary lifting. The crucial property is that the value stored at the LCA equals the bottleneck merge value for those two vertices.

Another implementation detail that is easy to get wrong is querying disconnected vertices. If two vertices never merged into the same DSU component, there is no valid wormhole system, so we return -1.
