A subtle pitfall appears when trying to maintain just a boolean per node and updating directly along edges. A subtree fill would require marking all descendants, which can degenerate to visiting nearly all nodes repeatedly. Similarly, emptying upward requires walking parent pointers, which becomes linear per query and breaks immediately on deep trees.

A direct simulation maintains a boolean array for each node. Filling a node performs a DFS to mark the entire subtree, and emptying performs repeated parent traversal to clear ancestors. This is conceptually straightforward and correct, but each operation can touch O(n) nodes in the worst case. With many queries, this degenerates to O(nq), which is far beyond feasible limits.

The key structural observation is that both operations become simple if we represent the tree in an Euler tour order. A subtree of a node corresponds to a contiguous segment in DFS order. The upward path to the root, however, does not correspond to a single segment, but it can be handled implicitly by tracking the most recent “blocking” operation affecting ancestors.

We introduce two ideas. First, we flatten the tree using Euler tour times so every subtree becomes a segment. Second, we maintain two timestamped structures: one that tracks the most recent subtree-fill affecting a node, and another that tracks the most recent ancestor-empty operation affecting it. A node is filled if the most recent fill affecting its subtree is newer than the most recent empty affecting its root path.

This transforms the problem into answering dominance between two types of updates over a tree order, both of which can be handled with a segment tree and a Fenwick-style prefix structure over time.

We root the tree at 1 and compute an Euler tour so that each node u is assigned an entry time tin[u] and exit time tout[u]. The subtree of u corresponds exactly to the interval [tin[u], tout[u]].

We maintain a segment tree over this Euler order that stores the latest time a subtree-fill operation was applied. Each update of type fill(v) writes a timestamp t over the full segment [tin[v], tout[v]].

Thus, empty(v) becomes a range assignment over all nodes u such that v is an ancestor of u, but this is again the subtree of v in the reversed sense of ancestor closure. The key simplification is to interpret clearing as setting a global “empty time” at v, and for a node u, the effective empty time is the maximum empty time among all ancestors of u. This can be maintained using a second segment tree that supports point updates at v and range maximum queries over root-to-node paths via Euler ordering plus a second structure.

A simpler and standard reduction avoids heavy path queries by using a second segment tree over tin order that supports prefix maximum queries after sorting nodes by depth entry events. We maintain a BIT or segment tree over tin where we store empty times, and query the maximum empty time among all ancestors by maintaining values on tin positions of ancestors.

At query time for node v, we compute:

  1. best_fill = maximum fill timestamp over subtree of v from segment tree on Euler intervals.
