Problem Understanding

We are given a set of distinct integers. We may delete at most k of them, where k ≤ 4. After deleting, we want all remaining numbers to produce different remainders modulo some positive integer m.

Two numbers collide modulo m exactly when their difference is divisible by m. So the condition

$$a_i \bmod m \ne a_j \bmod m$$

for every remaining pair is equivalent to saying that no remaining pair has difference divisible by m.

The task is to find the smallest positive m for which this becomes possible after removing at most k numbers.

The constraints completely shape the solution. We have up to 5000 numbers, which immediately rules out anything quadratic over all possible moduli. The numbers themselves are at most 10^6, so pairwise differences are at most 10^6 too. A naive search over every modulus and every pair would already be too large.

The crucial detail is that k is tiny. We are allowed to delete at most four numbers. Problems with a very small parameter often become graph problems or branching problems over the bad elements.

There are several easy-to-miss edge cases.

Consider:

Modulo 1, every number becomes 0, so all pairs collide. A careless implementation that assumes small moduli always work would fail here.

Another subtle case:

For m = 5, the numbers 0, 5, and 10 all collide. Removing only one number is not enough, because at least two of them still remain. A greedy strategy that deletes one endpoint from every conflicting pair independently would incorrectly think one deletion is enough.

A third important scenario is when the optimal modulus is larger than many differences:

Small moduli fail because some pair difference is divisible by them. Once m exceeds all problematic divisors, the collisions disappear. The optimal answer is not necessarily related to gcds of all numbers together.

Finally, when k ≥ n-1, we can always keep at most one number. Since a single number never collides with anything, the answer becomes 1.

Approaches

The brute-force viewpoint is straightforward. For a fixed modulus m, build groups by remainder a_i mod m. Any group containing more than one number creates conflicts. We ask whether removing at most k numbers can destroy all collisions.

Checking one modulus takes roughly O(n) using hashing. The problem is that we do not know how large m can be. Trying every modulus one by one is hopeless.

The real observation comes from rewriting the condition.

Two numbers collide modulo m if and only if:

$$m \mid (a_i - a_j)$$

So for a fixed modulus, every bad pair corresponds to a difference divisible by m.

Now think of a graph. Vertices are numbers. We connect two vertices if their difference is divisible by m. We want to remove at most k vertices so that no edges remain. That is exactly the vertex cover problem.

Normally vertex cover is hard, but our graph has a tiny solution size because k ≤ 4. This means we can solve it by standard branching. Pick any edge (u,v). Any valid solution must delete either u or v. Recurse on both choices. The branching depth is at most 4, so the search tree has size at most 2^4 = 16.

This reduces the problem to:

"Which moduli are worth testing?"

A modulus only matters if it divides some pairwise difference. Suppose a modulus m is valid. Then every conflict edge comes from differences divisible by m.

If we delete at most k vertices, at least n-k numbers remain. Among those remaining numbers, all pairwise differences are nonzero and not divisible by m.

Now take one surviving number x. Every deleted number can eliminate conflicts involving itself, but conflicts among survivors must already be absent. Since only four deletions are allowed, there exists a survivor whose conflicts involve at most k other numbers.

That means if m is invalid because of many divisibility relations, we can detect it quickly.

The standard way to exploit this is randomized reduction. Pick a few random pivots. For each pivot a_i, every valid modulus must divide some difference |a_i-a_j| for only a few problematic j. The number of divisors of a number up to 10^6 is small enough to enumerate.

So we generate candidate moduli from divisors of pairwise differences involving several sampled elements. For each candidate modulus, we run the bounded vertex-cover check.

The total number of divisors across sampled differences stays manageable.

Here, S is the number of sampled pivots, d is the divisor count per difference, and C is the number of candidate moduli.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Read the numbers and handle the trivial case k >= n-1.

If we can delete all but one element, then any modulus works, including 1. 2. Randomly shuffle the array.

The algorithm relies on sampling a few pivot elements. Randomization makes it very likely that at least one sampled element belongs to the large surviving set of an optimal solution. 3. For several sampled pivots, compute differences to every other number.

For a pivot x, every value |x-a_j| gives possible divisors that might become valid moduli. 4. Enumerate all divisors of those differences.

If a modulus creates a collision between x and a_j, then it must divide their difference. So every potentially useful modulus appears among these divisors. 5. Collect all distinct candidate moduli greater than zero.

The same divisor may appear many times from different differences. Store them in a set. 6. Sort candidates increasingly.

We need the minimum valid modulus, so we test smaller candidates first. 7. For each candidate modulus m, build the conflict graph implicitly.

Two indices conflict if their difference is divisible by m. 8. Run a bounded vertex-cover search with limit k.

Find any conflicting pair (u,v).

Any valid deletion set must remove at least one endpoint of this edge, so recurse into:

  • delete u
  • delete v

Decrease the remaining budget by one. 9. If no conflicting pair remains, the modulus is valid.

The first valid candidate encountered is the minimum answer.

Why it works

Every collision modulo m corresponds exactly to an edge in the conflict graph. Removing numbers until all remainders become distinct is equivalent to deleting vertices until the graph has no edges.

The recursive branching is correct because every remaining edge must lose at least one endpoint. The recursion explores all possible choices of which endpoint to delete, so it never misses a valid solution.

The candidate-generation step works because every relevant modulus must divide at least one pairwise difference. By sampling several pivots, with high probability we choose an element that survives in an optimal solution. All conflicting moduli involving that element appear among divisors of its differences to other numbers, so the optimal modulus is generated and tested.

The solution has two independent parts.

The first part generates candidate moduli. We only examine divisors of pairwise differences from a small random sample of pivots. Enumerating divisors takes O(sqrt(d)), which is fast because differences are at most 10^6.

The second part checks whether a modulus is feasible. Instead of explicitly constructing a sophisticated graph structure, the implementation simply stores all conflicting pairs as edges.

The recursive function performs bounded vertex cover. The key detail is the skipping loop at the beginning:

Edges already covered by deleted vertices are ignored. Once we find the first uncovered edge, we must delete one endpoint.

The recursion depth is at most k ≤ 4, so the branching tree stays tiny.

One subtle implementation point is that we backtrack the removed array carefully after each recursive call. Forgetting to undo a deletion would corrupt sibling branches.

Another subtlety is including candidate 1. It may already be valid when we can delete enough numbers.
