At every moment, we test whether the current height t lies inside any active interval. Once it does, we record the time difference t − q.

This is correct but expensive. Each pair may need to consider all m walls, and there are n pairs, so the worst case becomes O(nm). With 10^5 in both dimensions, this is far beyond feasible limits.

The key insight is to reverse the perspective. Instead of thinking about each pair independently, we observe that visibility at time t depends only on whether height t is covered by at least one active wall. So we are really maintaining a time-dependent coverage on the y-axis: intervals are added over time, and we want to know the earliest time t ≥ q when the point y = t becomes covered.

This suggests preprocessing the evolution of coverage over time. Since walls only appear and never disappear, we can sort all wall events by time and simulate their effect, maintaining the union of intervals on the y-axis. Whenever the union changes, we track the earliest time at which each y-value becomes covered.

Once we know, for each y, the first time it becomes covered, each query reduces to a simple “first blocking time ≥ q”, which can be answered with binary search.

Why it works

The invariant is that at any moment t, the maintained union of intervals exactly matches all points y that are blocked by at least one wall that has appeared by time t.
