The goal is to minimize this quadratic error.
The first thing to notice is that the constraints are large enough to rule out any state space based on actual coordinates. Values can reach $10^9$, so we cannot run dynamic programming over positions on the number line.
The interesting part is the structure of the constraints. The differences between neighboring elements are bounded, but the objective function is convex and separable. That combination strongly suggests that the optimal sequence should have a rigid geometric form.
The bound $n \le 6000$ is the real algorithmic clue. A cubic algorithm is borderline impossible in Python, while an $O(n^2)$ solution is comfortable. That usually points toward dynamic programming with convexity or a transformation that reduces the problem to a simpler optimization.
There are several edge cases that break naive reasoning.
Suppose $a=b$. Then every adjacent difference is fixed, so the entire sequence is determined by a single variable.

$$y_1,\ y_1+2,\ y_1+4$$
A careless solution that treats each position independently would fail because moving one element forces all later elements to move as well.
Another subtle case appears when the optimal unconstrained solution would leave the valid range $[1,q]$.

Without endpoint constraints, the best choice is close to $(1,5)$. But the maximum allowed difference already reaches the boundary, so the optimizer must clamp correctly. Missing this produces illegal coordinates slightly outside the interval.
The hardest edge case is when many different difference patterns are possible.

The optimal solution is not necessarily constant, because the sequence must satisfy positive gaps. A greedy strategy that always keeps values near the original points may get trapped locally.
The key challenge is understanding the geometry of feasible sequences.
Approaches
A brute force view starts by observing that every valid sequence is determined by its gaps:
$$d_i = y_{i+1} - y_i$$
with
$$a \le d_i \le b$$
and a starting point $y_1$.
If we fixed all gaps, then minimizing over $y_1$ would be easy because the objective becomes a quadratic function of one variable.
The problem is that there are exponentially many possible gap configurations. Even if $b-a$ were small, we would still have roughly:
$$(b-a+1)^{n-1}$$
possibilities. That becomes hopeless immediately.
The breakthrough comes from rewriting the sequence.
Define:
$$z_i = y_i - a(i-1)$$
Then:
$$0 \le z_{i+1} - z_i \le b-a$$
So the transformed sequence is non-decreasing.
Now look at the cost:
$$(x_i - y_i)^2 = (x_i - a(i-1) - z_i)^2$$

$$t_i = x_i - a(i-1)$$
The problem becomes:
Choose a non-decreasing sequence $z_i$ minimizing
$$\sum (t_i - z_i)^2$$
with bounded range constraints inherited from $1 \le y_i \le q$.
This is exactly isotonic regression with squared loss.
For squared error, isotonic regression has a remarkable property: the optimal solution is piecewise constant, and it can be found greedily using the Pool Adjacent Violators algorithm, usually called PAV.
The original difficult global optimization collapses into merging blocks whose averages violate monotonicity.
After computing the optimal $z_i$, we reconstruct:
$$y_i = z_i + a(i-1)$$
The remaining upper-bound constraint on differences is handled symmetrically by another transformation.
Instead of directly solving with both lower and upper gap constraints, define:
$$y_i = a(i-1) + (b-a)s_i$$
where $s_i$ becomes a non-decreasing sequence with slope at most $1$. This converts the problem into projection onto a convex cone, which still admits an isotonic-style solution.
The elegant simplification is to parameterize every feasible sequence by choosing increments in $[0,b-a]$. The optimal sequence turns out to correspond to projecting transformed coordinates onto monotone constraints.
The final implementation uses dynamic programming with convexity optimization based on this structure.

Algorithm Walkthrough
1. Remove the mandatory minimum slope
Define:
$$t_i = x_i - a(i-1)$$
and
$$z_i = y_i - a(i-1)$$
Then the original constraint
$$a \le y_{i+1}-y_i \le b$$
becomes
$$0 \le z_{i+1}-z_i \le b-a$$
This isolates the difficult part into a bounded monotone sequence.
2. Convert the upper slope bound
Define:
$$w_i = z_i - (b-a)i$$
Then:
$$0 \le z_{i+1}-z_i \le b-a$$
transforms into:
$$w_{i+1} \le w_i$$
So $w_i$ is non-increasing.
The objective remains quadratic:
$$\sum (t_i - a(i-1) - (b-a)i - w_i)^2$$
which is still separable.
3. Solve isotonic regression
We now need the closest non-increasing sequence under squared error.
PAV maintains blocks with:
- total weight
- average value
- interval length
Initially every position forms its own block.
Whenever two adjacent block averages violate monotonicity, we merge them.
The merged block average is simply the weighted mean of the two averages. Convexity guarantees this is optimal.
4. Expand blocks back into values
After all violations disappear, every block has a constant optimal value.
Assign that value to every index inside the block.
This gives the optimal transformed sequence.
5. Recover the original coordinates
Undo the transformations step by step:
$$z_i = w_i + (b-a)i$$
then
$$y_i = z_i + a(i-1)$$
The resulting sequence automatically satisfies all constraints.
Why it works
The feasible set after transformation becomes a convex cone defined only by monotonicity constraints. Minimizing squared distance to a convex set has a unique projection.
PAV computes exactly this projection. Whenever two neighboring blocks violate monotonicity, replacing them by their weighted average strictly improves the objective while restoring feasibility locally. Repeating until no violations remain produces the global optimum because squared loss is convex.
The transformations preserve feasibility and objective structure, so the recovered sequence is optimal for the original problem as well.

The implementation follows the transformations literally.
The function pav_nonincreasing performs isotonic regression for a non-increasing sequence. Each block stores the sum of values and the number of elements. The average is computed lazily as sum / count.
The merge condition is easy to get backward. Since we need a non-increasing sequence, neighboring block averages must satisfy:
$$\text{left average} \ge \text{right average}$$
If that inequality fails, the blocks are merged.
The reconstruction step must undo transformations in the correct order. Forgetting one of the offsets changes the slope constraints entirely.
Floating point precision is sufficient because the checker allows $10^{-6}$ absolute or relative error.
