So each pair of vertices is connected by a value that depends on which small weights you can “avoid” along a path, rather than accumulating them.

Now we are given a second graph with q vertices. Each vertex is labeled by a color, and each color corresponds to a vertex in the original graph. If we want to connect two vertices i and j in this new graph, we are allowed to add an edge, but it costs dis(c[i], c[j]). We must build a connected graph on these q vertices with minimum total cost.

The task is to choose a set of edges that connects all vertices in the new graph, minimizing the sum of these special distances. If some color pairs are not connected in the original graph, we cannot use that edge at all, which can make the final graph impossible to connect.

The constraints are large enough that any solution trying to explicitly compute dis(u, v) for all pairs is immediately infeasible. There are up to 3e5 vertices and edges overall, and up to 3e5 colored nodes across test cases. A naive all-pairs shortest path or even Dijkstra per pair is completely out of range.

A key subtlety is that edge weights are bounded by m, but mex distances depend only on the presence or absence of small weights along a path. This suggests the structure is driven by which weights can be “avoided” simultaneously.

A naive mistake is to assume this behaves like shortest path in a weighted graph. For example, one might try to assign each edge weight w as cost w and run MST on the color graph. That is wrong because mex ignores magnitude and only cares about missing integers in the set of used edge weights.

Another failure mode is trying to precompute connectivity for each threshold w, assuming monotonicity like “edges with weight ≤ w”. That also fails because mex depends on presence, not reachability under bounded weights.

Approaches

A brute-force idea is to compute dis(u, v) for every pair of colors appearing in the new graph, then run a minimum spanning tree over those q vertices using those distances. Computing one dis(u, v) is already non-trivial because it is a path optimization over mex of sets.

If we attempt to compute dis(u, v) by exploring all paths, each path has a set of weights and we want to minimize mex. The number of paths is exponential, and even a BFS over states of used weights is impossible because the state space includes subsets of weights up to m.

So the bottleneck is computing pairwise distances in a graph where edge costs are not additive but defined by a set function.

The key insight is to reverse the viewpoint. Instead of thinking about paths, we think about what mex value a path guarantees.

A path has mex at least k if and only if all weights 0, 1, ..., k-1 are missing from its edge set. That means for each such weight w < k, the path must avoid using any edge with weight w. So if we remove all edges with weight < k, the remaining graph defines whether two nodes can be connected without using forbidden weights.

This gives a monotonic structure: for a fixed k, we only need connectivity in a subgraph containing edges with weight at least k. That is a standard DSU sweep idea.

Now dis(u, v) is the minimum k such that u and v are connected in the graph where we delete all edges with weight < k. So for each threshold, we maintain connectivity, and the moment two nodes become connected as we increase k, that k is their distance.

Instead of querying all pairs, we only care about the subset of nodes that appear as colors. We can track when each DSU component first contains each color-representative node, but doing this directly still sounds heavy.

The final transformation is to invert roles again. We process weights in increasing order and union endpoints. Each time we union two DSU components, we effectively create edges in the “distance graph” between all pairs of colors across components with cost equal to current weight. But we do not explicitly connect all pairs; instead, we use Kruskal-like reasoning: the minimal spanning tree over color-nodes can be built if we consider that whenever two color nodes first become connected, that defines the cheapest possible connection between their components.

Thus we reduce the problem to building a MST over colors, where edge candidates are discovered dynamically during DSU merges on the original graph.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Sort all edges of the original graph by weight in increasing order. This ensures we reveal smaller forbidden weights first, which directly corresponds to increasing mex thresholds.
  2. Initialize a DSU over the n original vertices. Each DSU component will represent connectivity using only edges with weight ≥ current threshold logic.
  3. Maintain a list of which color nodes belong to each DSU component. Initially, each vertex contains the colors equal to itself if it appears in the color array. We store these as small sets or vectors per component.
  4. Sweep edges in increasing order of weight, and for each edge (u, v, w), union their DSU components. Before merging, we compare the color sets of both components.
  5. For every pair of colors where one is in the left component and one is in the right component, we can now establish a candidate connection cost equal to w. Rather than enumerating all pairs, we add edges between representative structures and rely on union-by-size merging of color sets to bound total work.
  6. Perform a Kruskal-like MST process on the q color nodes using these implicit edges. Each time two components of colors get connected via some DSU merge at weight w, we treat that as an edge of cost w in the color graph.
  7. Run a second DSU on the q color nodes, applying these discovered edges in increasing weight order. Sum the weights when unions succeed.
  8. If after processing all merges the color DSU is not fully connected, output -1.

Why it works

The original DSU sweep ensures that weight w is the earliest threshold at which certain original vertices become connected without using edges of smaller weight. That exactly corresponds to the mex becoming at most w between those nodes. Each such event defines the first possible cost edge between their colors. Because we always consider weights in increasing order, every candidate edge corresponds to a minimal achievable mex distance between two color groups. The second DSU constructs a minimum spanning tree over these minimal connection costs, guaranteeing minimal total cost to connect all colors.

The DSU over original vertices tracks connectivity as edges are introduced in increasing weight order.
