This makes naive state explosion unavoidable. Even restricting to subtree DP, each node could interact with many downward extensions, leading to exponential behavior in worst cases.

The crucial observation is that gcd constraints behave monotonically along chains, but only in terms of prime divisibility. A vertical path is valid if and only if there exists at least one prime that divides all values in the path. So each node can be thought of as carrying a set of prime factors, and a path is valid if it stays within at least one shared prime “channel”.

Instead of tracking full gcds or subsets of primes explicitly, we invert the viewpoint: each node must be assigned to exactly one parent-child chain where it shares at least one prime factor with all ancestors in that chain. This suggests that for each node, the decision is not about full structure, but about whether it can extend some existing chain from its children upward.

Now consider processing nodes in decreasing order of labels. When we process a node, all its children already have been assigned into optimal chain counts in their subtrees. The node’s role is to merge as many child chains as possible upward if they share a common prime factor with the node.

The key reduction is that for each node, we only need to track how many “unmatched chain endpoints” come from children, grouped by primes dividing the node’s value. Each child subtree contributes some number of chains that must be connected upward through the parent or remain separate. Algorithm Walkthrough

We process nodes in decreasing order of labels so that children are always handled before parents.

  1. For each node, factorize its value into its distinct prime factors. These primes define the only possible ways a chain through this node can remain valid. This is the only information that matters for compatibility with children.
  2. Maintain, for each node, a value representing how many vertical paths are currently “open” in its subtree. An open path is one that starts somewhere in the subtree and is not yet connected upward through the parent.
  3. When processing a node u, collect contributions from all children. Each child has already computed how many open paths remain in its subtree after optimally covering it.
  4. The node u attempts to merge these child paths. A child path can be merged upward through u if and only if the child’s chain can be extended through u, meaning the chain shares at least one prime factor with a_u. If multiple children qualify under the same prime, they can be grouped through that prime channel.
  5. For each distinct prime p dividing a_u, we greedily absorb as many child open paths as possible that are compatible with p. Any child path that cannot be assigned to any prime of u remains an open path that must continue upward unchanged.
  6. After processing all children, the number of remaining open paths plus one new path created at u determines the contribution upward from this subtree.

The reasoning behind step 6 is that u itself must belong to exactly one vertical path, so either it extends one of the absorbed chains or starts a new one. All other unresolved chains must be passed upward as independent requirements.

Why it works

The invariant is that for every node u, after processing it, we maintain the minimum number of upward chains that represent all ways its subtree can be partitioned into valid gcd paths. Every open chain corresponds to a partially built vertical path that has not yet been assigned a complete extension to the root of the current subtree. Because gcd validity depends only on shared prime factors, merging decisions are locally optimal: once a chain cannot be extended through a node due to missing prime overlap, no ancestor can repair that incompatibility.
