The key observation is that movement within a row is unrestricted horizontally, meaning once we enter a row at a given column, we can sweep that row segment as far left and right as we want before deciding where to go down. So in any valid visited set, each row contributes a contiguous interval of visited columns, because if two cells in the same row are visited, the path can connect them without leaving the row. There is no reason to “skip” a middle cell in the same row and still connect both ends, since horizontal movement forces connectivity.

Thus every reachable configuration can be seen as a sequence of intervals, one per row, where each interval is connected to the next via at least one vertical connection. Since movement is only downward between rows, the structure is monotone: once we leave a row, we never return.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Edge Cases
