Problem Understanding

The interactive version allows us to ask up to three carefully chosen instructions and observe the surviving snakes. In the hacked version, the speeds are already given in the input, and our job is to reproduce the answer that an optimal interactive solution would output.

Each snake starts at a distinct integer position. Its speed is one of 0, 1, or 2.

If we issue a one-second instruction L, every snake moves left by its speed. During that second, whenever two snakes meet, the faster one disappears. Since speeds are at most 2 and all positions are integers, during a one-second move only neighboring snakes whose distance is 1 or 2 can interact.

The key question is not "what are the speeds?" because the hacked input already contains them. The real question is whether the speeds are uniquely recoverable by some strategy using at most three queries. If not, we must print -1.

The total sum of n is at most 10^5, so any solution that performs only a constant amount of work per snake is easily fast enough. Anything quadratic is ruled out.

The subtle part is characterizing exactly when a speed cannot be determined, even with the best possible sequence of three queries.

Consider three consecutive snakes at positions x, x+1, x+2 with speeds [0, 1, 0] or [0, 2, 0]. The middle snake always dies in every useful experiment because it is trapped between two stationary snakes. Every observation obtainable from the allowed queries is identical for speed 1 and speed 2. These two worlds cannot be distinguished, so the answer must be -1. This is the only obstruction.

Approaches

A brute-force mindset would be to model all possible query strings of length up to 4n, simulate the snake system, and ask whether every speed assignment produces a unique transcript. That is clearly impossible. The number of possible instructions is exponential, and even a single simulation is nontrivial.

The official solution instead designs three fixed queries:

The remarkable observation is that these three queries reveal almost everything.

After a one-second L, every surviving snake ends at

a_i - s_i.

Now look at the query LR. The first second is exactly the same L, so the same snakes survive. The second second moves every survivor back to the right by its own speed, restoring it to its original position. Consequently, the output of LR is simply the set of original positions of the snakes that survived the L query.

Matching the survivors between L and LR immediately gives the speed of every snake that survives the first query.

The remaining snakes are exactly those eliminated during L. Their speeds can be reconstructed from local position gaps and the R query. Only one ambiguous configuration remains: three consecutive positions with speeds 0, x, 0, where x may be either 1 or 2. Whenever such a pattern exists, the correct answer is -1. Otherwise all speeds are uniquely determined.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Simulate the answer to query L.

Let the resulting survivor positions be vl. 2. Simulate the answer to query LR.

Let the resulting positions be vlr.

Every position in vlr is an original position of a snake that survived L. 3. Match vlr against the original position array.

If position a[i] appears in vlr, snake i survived the L query. 4. Recover the speed of every survivor.

Suppose snake i survived L.

Its position in vl is a[i] - s[i].

Hence

s[i] = a[i] - vl[j]. 5. Some snakes did not survive L.

For each unresolved snake i > 0, examine the gap

d = a[i] - a[i-1].

If d = 2, or if d = 1 and the previous speed is already known to be nonzero, then snake i must have speed 2.

These are exactly the situations where a speed 2 snake is forced to die during the leftward move. 6. Simulate query R.

Let the survivor positions be vr.

Every remaining unresolved snake can now be matched against vr, and its speed is

vr[pos] - a[i]. 7. Check for the unique impossible pattern.

For every three consecutive positions with unit gaps,

a[i+1] - a[i] = 1

and

a[i+2] - a[i+1] = 1.

If the reconstructed speeds look like

[0, nonzero, 0]

then the middle value cannot be distinguished between 1 and 2.

Output -1. 8. Otherwise output all reconstructed speeds.

Why it works

The query L identifies which snakes survive a leftward move. The query LR converts that information into original indices because every survivor returns to its starting position. Together, these two queries determine the speed of every survivor exactly.

The only snakes still unknown are those removed during L. Local geometry of gaps 1 and 2 forces some of them to be speed 2. The query R determines all remaining values.

The editorial proves that the only configuration that remains fundamentally ambiguous after any sequence of at most three queries is a triple of consecutive snakes with speeds 0, x, 0, where x may be 1 or 2. If such a pattern exists, no strategy can distinguish the two possibilities. In every other configuration, the three fixed queries above uniquely determine every speed.

The implementation follows the reconstruction argument directly.

The first phase emulates the information obtained from the three fixed queries. The second phase fills in the speeds of snakes that survive L. The third phase resolves snakes that must have speed 2 from local gap constraints. Any still-unresolved snake is determined from the R query.

The final scan checks the only impossible configuration. Missing this check produces Wrong Answer on the official tests because such instances must return -1 even though the input already contains a concrete speed assignment.
