Approaches

At each step, we maintain the set of currently “exposed” vertices whose parent has been placed, then choose a valid next vertex that satisfies both the parent-depth rule and the distance constraint to the previous vertex. We recursively branch over all valid choices.
This is correct conceptually because it follows the rules exactly. However, the state space grows exponentially. Even in a balanced tree, the frontier can be large, and at each step multiple choices may exist, producing up to factorial-like branching in worst cases such as stars or layered trees. The key observation is that the “choose parent with maximum depth” rule strongly restricts which region of the tree is active at each step. At any moment, the only candidates are children of nodes that lie on the current maximum-depth frontier. This means the process behaves like we are gradually expanding a frontier from deep nodes upward in a controlled way.
We can reinterpret the process as maintaining, for each depth level, how many “active” nodes exist whose parent has been used and is currently the deepest available parent. The selection rule ensures that we always prioritize expanding from the deepest currently reachable layer, so transitions only occur between adjacent depth layers in a structured manner.
Now consider the distance constraint k. In a tree, distance between consecutive placements depends on their least common ancestor depth. Because we only ever move between nodes whose parents are already active, we can compress transitions into interactions between depth layers rather than arbitrary nodes.

This leads to a tree DP where we accumulate contributions from children and combine them using combinatorial counting of valid activation sequences, typically implemented using prefix aggregation over depth-restricted intervals.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Why it works
The process always maintains a frontier of nodes whose parents are already chosen. The rule that selects parents with maximum depth guarantees that this frontier evolves in a layered manner, never skipping depth levels arbitrarily. Because of this, the only factor influencing valid transitions is whether a node lies within the current active depth band and satisfies the distance constraint.
