For every possible choice of a root $r$, we conceptually “re-root” the tree at $r$ and then look at all ways of selecting exactly $k$ distinct nodes. For each such selection, we compute their lowest common ancestor with respect to that rooted tree. This produces a collection of nodes, and we care only about which nodes can appear at least once as such an LCA. That set of reachable LCA nodes is denoted $S_r$, and its size is the “cuteness” for that root.

The task is not to compute this for one root, but for every node as root, and sum all the cuteness values.

The main difficulty is that changing the root completely changes LCA relationships, so the same tree must be reinterpreted $n$ times under different orientations. A naive interpretation would try to recompute reachability of LCAs per root, but that would immediately lead to recomputing heavy tree structures $n$ times.

The constraints make this impossible. The sum of $n$ over all test cases is $2 \cdot 10^5$, so any solution must be close to linear or near-linear per test case. Anything like $O(n^2)$ or repeated LCA preprocessing per root is immediately ruled out. Even $O(n \log n)$ per root is far too large.

A subtle edge case appears when $k = n$. In that case every selection of nodes is the whole tree, so every LCA is the root itself. Thus $S_r = {r}$, and the answer becomes exactly $n$. Any solution that does not explicitly recognize this degeneracy may overcount incorrectly or waste computation.

Another corner case is when the tree is a star. Depending on the root, the LCA structure collapses differently, and naive reasoning based on fixed-root intuition often fails because “deep” nodes may stop being LCAs once the root changes.

A direct brute-force approach fixes a root $r$, enumerates all $\binom{n}{k}$ subsets, computes LCAs for each subset, and records all possible results. This is correct in definition, but the number of subsets alone is already exponential. Even computing a single LCA per subset is unnecessary; the combinatorial explosion dominates.

Even if we try to simplify and only reason about which nodes can appear as LCAs, we still need to understand when a node $x$ can be the LCA of some $k$-subset under root $r$. The key structural observation is that LCA is determined entirely by subtree containment in the rooted tree. A node becomes an LCA of a set if the selected nodes are distributed across at least two different child subtrees of that node (or include the node itself), and all selected nodes lie in its subtree.

This reframes the problem from “enumerating subsets” to “checking feasibility conditions on subtree sizes”.

Now the crucial simplification is to invert perspective. Instead of asking which nodes can be LCAs for a fixed root, we ask for a fixed node $x$, for how many roots $r$ does $x$ belong to $S_r$. Then we sum contributions over nodes.

The second key idea is to observe how root choice affects whether a node $x$ can be an LCA. When we root the tree at $r$, the tree splits at every edge depending on orientation, but the underlying undirected structure is fixed. The contribution of each node can be derived from how the root partitions its neighbors.

Algorithm Walkthrough

The key is to compute, for every root, the structure of component sizes around every node efficiently.

  1. Fix an arbitrary root, say node 1, and compute standard subtree sizes and parent relationships using a DFS. This gives a baseline view of the tree.
  2. For each node $x$, we want to know what happens if $x$ is the root. Instead of rebuilding the tree, we use rerooting DP to compute, for every node, the sizes of its adjacent “directional components” under that root.

Edge Cases

A single edge tree exposes the smallest structure where no node except trivial endpoints can form multiple components. In that case, every component split has size 1, so for any $k \ge 2$, no node can satisfy the condition of having two large components, and the result correctly collapses.
