This suggests flipping the perspective: instead of tracking merges, we track for each element how long it can survive and how many merges it can "cover" as the maximum.

A crucial observation is that each time two neighboring segments merge, the cost is determined by the larger segment endpoint that survives. If we think in terms of segment expansion, a value a[i] can be used as the cost contributor for merges until it is eventually absorbed by something larger. This is closely related to maintaining, for each position, the nearest strictly larger element on both sides.

The correct structure emerges from considering each element as a potential "blocker" that stops smaller values from propagating across it. Algorithm Walkthrough

We convert the circle into a linear structure by doubling the array so circular boundaries become linear segments. Then we compute, for each position, the nearest greater element boundaries using a monotonic decreasing stack.

  1. Extend the array to length 2n by concatenating it with itself. This allows circular wrap-around queries to be treated as subarray queries.
  2. Compute the next greater element to the right for every index using a monotonic stack. We scan left to right, maintaining a stack of indices with decreasing values. When we see a larger value, we pop until the invariant is restored. This gives, for each position, the first strictly greater element to its right.
  3. Compute the previous greater element to the left in a similar way by scanning right to left.
  4. Restrict these boundaries back to the original n-length window. For each i, we now know the maximal segment in which a[i] is the maximum element.
  5. Interpret this segment as the region where a[i] can be responsible for merge costs. The number of merges it can dominate corresponds to how many elements lie in its dominance interval, adjusted so overlapping contributions are not double counted.
