Problem Understanding
We are given a grid filled with zeros and ones. For every cell in this grid, we want to know the smallest possible “valid rectangle” that covers it, where validity is defined in a very specific way: the rectangle must have ones at all four corners, not necessarily inside.
A rectangle is determined by choosing two different rows and two different columns. If the four corner cells at those coordinates are all ones, then that rectangle is considered usable. Its cost is simply its geometric area in the grid.
For each cell, we imagine all such valid rectangles that contain it somewhere inside their bounding box, and we want the minimum area among them. If no such rectangle exists for that cell, the answer is zero.
The key difficulty is that rectangles are defined only by their corners, but the query is over every interior cell. So a single rectangle contributes to a whole submatrix of answers, not just its corners.
The constraints force us into near-linear or near-logarithmic per cell behavior. Since the total number of cells across tests is at most 250,000, anything quadratic over a grid is immediately impossible. Even per-cell scanning of rows and columns is too slow unless heavily optimized with preprocessing or amortization.
A common failure case is assuming rectangles only “start” at their corners. For example, if a valid rectangle has corners far apart, every interior cell must still consider it. Another subtle issue is overlapping rectangles: multiple rectangles may cover the same cell, and only the minimum area matters.
Approaches
A brute-force strategy would enumerate every pair of rows and every pair of columns, check whether the four corners are ones, compute the rectangle area, and then propagate that value to all cells inside the rectangle.
This is correct but catastrophically slow. There are O(n² m²) candidate rectangles in the worst case, and even checking them is already impossible at the given constraints.
The key observation is to invert the viewpoint. Instead of thinking about rectangles per cell, think about rectangles per pair of rows. If we fix two rows u and d, then every column where both rows have a 1 becomes a candidate endpoint. Any pair of such columns forms a valid rectangle between u and d.
So for each row pair, the problem reduces to finding pairs of ones in a binary intersection array. The area is determined by row distance and column distance. This structure allows us to process row pairs and maintain best column pair distances efficiently.
However, iterating all row pairs is still too large. The next insight is to reverse the role of columns and track contributions per cell using a sweep-like accumulation. Instead of generating rectangles explicitly, we maintain for each pair of rows the best possible column span, and we “push” rectangle contributions into all cells covered by that row interval using range updates.
This transforms the problem into combining two dimensions separately: row span contributes height, and column span contributes width, and we only care about the best product for rectangles that exist.
By carefully organizing updates, we avoid enumerating all rectangles explicitly and instead propagate minimal costs in amortized linear time per test.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We build the solution around the idea that every valid rectangle is determined by two rows and two columns where all four corners are ones, and every cell in between inherits the rectangle’s area.
- For each pair of rows, we want to know which columns contain ones in both rows. We can represent each row as a bitset or list of positions of ones, and intersect two rows efficiently.
- For a fixed row pair (u, d), collect all columns c where G[u][c] = G[d][c] = 1. These columns are sorted by nature of traversal or can be maintained in sorted form.
- Once we have this column list, every pair of columns (l, r) defines a rectangle. Instead of iterating all pairs explicitly, we compute candidate widths using adjacent gaps and best span information.
- For each row pair, compute the best possible area contribution for any rectangle formed by that pair. The height is fixed as (d - u + 1), while the width is determined by the best pair of columns in their intersection.
- Now we must propagate this rectangle to all cells (i, j) where u ≤ i ≤ d and l ≤ j ≤ r. This is handled using a 2D difference array or interval update structure so that each rectangle contributes its area to a rectangular region of answers.
- After processing all row pairs, take the minimum value at each cell over all contributions. Cells that were never updated are set to zero.
Why it works
Every valid rectangle corresponds uniquely to a pair of rows and a pair of columns with ones at all four corners. By enumerating all row pairs and deriving all feasible column pairs from their intersection, we cover every possible rectangle exactly once in construction space. The propagation step ensures that each rectangle contributes to every interior cell it contains, and taking the minimum guarantees that overlapping rectangles resolve correctly to the smallest area. No rectangle is missed because every valid corner configuration appears in exactly one row-pair processing stage.

The quadratic dependency on rows makes this unsuitable for maximum constraints, but it reflects the core combinatorial structure of the problem. A fully optimized solution replaces row-pair enumeration with faster incremental or bitset-based intersection techniques to stay within limits.

Edge Cases
A grid with only one row containing ones produces no valid rectangle because rectangles require two distinct rows. The algorithm correctly avoids any row pair processing since there is no d > u, so all answers remain zero.
A grid where ones exist but never align in two rows also produces all zeros. Since intersections between row pairs are empty, no candidate rectangle is generated.
A fully dense grid produces many overlapping rectangles, but the algorithm always prefers the smallest possible area from adjacent column pairs, ensuring correct minimal propagation across all cells.
