However, finding such a path repeatedly requires scanning the tree or maintaining dynamic sets of uncovered nodes.

In the worst case, each path might cover only one new monster, leading to O(k·n) behavior, which degenerates to O(n²). With 250k nodes, this is completely infeasible.

The structural insight is that the tree can be seen as a set of root-to-leaf chains, and every monster only matters at the highest point where it diverges from other monsters. What actually forces a new path is a “branching event” along some root-to-node path where multiple monster-subtrees diverge.

If we traverse from root downward, the moment we enter a subtree that contains at least one monster, that subtree can be handled by a single path continuation. The only time we need an additional path is when multiple disjoint “monster continuations” exist at a node.

This suggests thinking in terms of contributions from edges or nodes that separate active parts of the tree, rather than individual monsters.

The inversion queries add another layer: subtree flips mean we need a data structure that can maintain dynamic counts of active nodes in subtrees and also aggregate structural contributions efficiently. This naturally leads to Euler tour flattening and a segment tree with lazy propagation, but we also need to maintain more than counts: we need a way to track how active nodes induce required paths.

The crucial reformulation is that the answer equals the number of “active upward transitions” in a virtual decomposition where we maintain, for each node, whether its subtree contains any active nodes and how these active regions connect upward. Each time a node has active descendants in multiple child branches, it increases the required number of paths.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We root the tree at 1 and build an Euler tour so each subtree becomes a contiguous segment. This allows subtree inversion queries to become range flips.

We maintain a segment tree over the Euler order that tracks whether a node is currently active (has a monster after all flips). Each node in the segment tree can answer whether its segment contains at least one active node.

However, this alone is insufficient because we do not only need counts, we need the structure of how active nodes connect upward.

We introduce a second structural idea: for each node, we maintain how many of its children subtrees currently contain at least one active node. Call this value the active-child count.

Now observe what the answer means in terms of these counts. A root-to-leaf path can only follow one child at each branching point. If a node has two or more child subtrees that contain active nodes, then any covering of all active nodes must use separate root paths for at least (number of such branches − 1) extra paths beyond the first continuation.

This leads to a well-known transformation: the minimum number of root paths equals the number of “active leaves” in the virtual compressed tree where we repeatedly merge single-child chains. Equivalently, it equals the number of nodes that start a new independent downward continuation, which is exactly the number of times we enter a child subtree that is the first active child of a node minus the merges caused by other active children.

We maintain for each node:

  1. Whether its subtree currently contains any active node.
  2. The number of children whose subtree is active.
  3. The contribution to the global answer from that node, which is max(0, active_children − 1).

The key invariant is that at any point, the stored active-child count for each node exactly reflects the number of its children whose subtree contains at least one active node, and the global answer is exactly the sum over nodes of max(0, cnt[v] − 1). Since every path branching requirement is localized at the lowest branching point, this sum correctly counts the minimum number of root-starting paths needed.
