Problem Understanding

We are given an array that grows one element at a time from left to right. After each new element is appended, we look at all subarrays that end exactly at this new position. Among those subarrays, we want the one that maximizes a particular score.

The score of a subarray is defined in a slightly indirect way. First compute the MEX of the subarray, meaning the smallest non-negative integer missing from it. Then count how many elements in the subarray are strictly greater than that MEX. That count is the weight of the subarray.

So at every position i, we are asking: among all segments [l, i], what is the largest possible number of elements that exceed the MEX of that segment.

The difficulty comes from the circular dependency: the MEX depends on which values are included, but the weight depends on the MEX. Changing the left endpoint changes both in a coupled way. A naive approach would recompute MEX and counts for every (l, i) pair, which is far too slow for n up to 3e5.

A key constraint implication is that any solution that tries all subarrays is quadratic per test case and therefore immediately infeasible. Even maintaining MEX dynamically per left pointer leads to at least logarithmic overhead per update, which is still too slow overall.

A subtle edge case appears when the array contains large gaps or repeated values. For example, if all values are equal to zero, MEX of any subarray is 1, so the weight is always zero. A naive intuition might suggest expanding or shrinking intervals can increase weight, but in such cases it never improves, and incorrect greedy expansion strategies can easily overcount.

Another tricky scenario happens when MEX jumps significantly after including a missing small number, causing many elements to stop contributing to the weight. For instance, adding a 1 into a segment containing only zeros increases MEX from 1 to 2, suddenly making all 2+ elements relevant. This non-monotonic behavior is what makes brute force reasoning fail.

Approaches

A direct brute-force method fixes an endpoint i and tries every starting point l, computing MEX and counting elements greater than it. Computing MEX from scratch takes O(n) in the worst case or O(log n) with frequency structures, and counting is linear in segment length. This gives an overall O(n^3) or at best O(n^2 log n) solution, which is too slow for 3e5.

The structural insight is that MEX is determined only by the presence of values starting from 0 upward. If a subarray contains all numbers 0..k-1, then its MEX is at least k. So instead of thinking in terms of arbitrary subarrays, we can think in terms of how far we can extend a subarray while maintaining certain coverage of small values.

For a fixed right endpoint i, consider choosing a left endpoint l. As we move l rightward, we remove elements from the subarray. This can only increase the MEX or keep it unchanged, because removing elements cannot introduce missing values among already absent ones. However, increasing MEX reduces the threshold defining “greater than MEX”, while shrinking the subarray reduces available candidates. The balance between these two effects is what we exploit.

The key idea is to reframe the problem: instead of explicitly tracking MEX for every segment, we maintain a dynamic window where we control how many small values are missing. For a candidate MEX k, a subarray must contain all values 0..k-1. Among all such subarrays ending at i, the best one is the longest suffix that still satisfies this constraint, because including more elements only increases the count of elements greater than k or equal contributions without breaking feasibility.

This leads to a monotonic structure: as k increases, the required window becomes harder to maintain, so the optimal segment shifts in a predictable way. We can therefore maintain frequencies and a sliding left pointer for each possible MEX threshold indirectly.

A more efficient perspective is to fix the right endpoint and compute, for every possible MEX value k, the best possible weight contributed by segments whose MEX is exactly k. Each value k is constrained by having at least one occurrence of every number < k in the segment, which can be tracked via last-seen positions. The segment that maximizes the number of elements greater than k is the suffix starting after the earliest violation of these constraints.

By maintaining, for each k, the earliest position where a required value is missing, we can derive a valid left boundary. Then we count elements greater than k using prefix counts or a Fenwick tree over value space. Since values are bounded by n, we can maintain frequency prefix sums incrementally.

Finally, instead of iterating over all k, we observe that only values that actually appear near the boundary of validity matter, and updates can be processed incrementally as we move i. This reduces the process to roughly O(n log n) with careful bookkeeping.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Process the array from left to right, maintaining frequency counts of values in the current prefix. This allows us to answer MEX-related queries about any suffix ending at i without recomputing from scratch.

Why it works

Any valid subarray ending at i has a well-defined MEX k, and must contain all values 0..k-1. Among all such subarrays, extending the left boundary until just before one of these required values disappears can only increase or maintain the number of elements greater than k, since removing elements below or equal to k never increases the count of elements above k. Therefore, for each possible MEX, the optimal subarray is uniquely determined by feasibility constraints, and comparing across all k yields the global optimum.

A fully optimized solution would avoid rebuilding cnt arrays repeatedly and instead maintain global structures for last occurrences and value frequency, turning the inner loop into amortized constant or logarithmic work.

Worked Examples

Consider the array [2, 0, 3, 0, 1].

At i = 0, only subarray [2] exists. Its MEX is 0, so weight counts elements greater than 0, which is 1. But since no smaller stabilizing subarray improves this, the answer is 0.

At i = 2, array is [2, 0, 3]. We evaluate suffixes:

Edge Cases

A fully zero array keeps MEX fixed at 1 for every subarray. The algorithm naturally evaluates every suffix and finds that no element exceeds 1, so every candidate weight is zero.

A permutation like [0,1,2,...,n] produces strictly increasing MEX for prefixes. Every suffix that includes the full prefix maximizes weight, since every new element increases the count of values greater than the current MEX threshold in a predictable way.

Arrays with repeated large values but missing small values, such as [5,5,5,0], expose the non-monotonic behavior of MEX. Before 0 is included, MEX is 0 and weight is 0.
