A subtle edge case arises when intervals are identical or heavily overlapping. For example, if all intervals are [1, 10^9], any pairing can produce a full-length segment, so the answer is maximal. On the other hand, if intervals are disjoint and very small, pairing cannot significantly increase length, and greedy matching becomes critical.
A naive approach that pairs arbitrary intervals (say in input order) fails because optimal pairing depends strongly on interval geometry. For instance, pairing a very wide interval with a very narrow one can waste potential, while pairing two wide intervals can produce a much larger constructed segment.

A brute-force strategy would try all possible pairings of intervals and, for each pairing, choose optimal points inside each pair. For a fixed pairing of two intervals [l1, r1] and [l2, r2], the best construction is to pick x as large as possible in the left interval and y as large as possible in the right interval while respecting x ≤ y, or symmetrically adjust to maximize y − x. Even for one pairing this is manageable, but the number of pairings is enormous.
The number of ways to pair n intervals is roughly (n − 1)!!, which grows super-exponentially. This immediately makes brute force impossible.
The key observation is that the internal choice inside each pair is not independent of pairing structure, but it simplifies to a deterministic value once endpoints are fixed optimally. Each pair contributes the maximum possible difference between a point in one interval and a point in the other. This reduces the problem to selecting a pairing that maximizes a sum of pairwise contributions.
If we sort intervals by their left endpoints, we can interpret the problem as repeatedly pairing extremes. Intuitively, the best strategy is to match intervals in a way that maximizes separation between chosen representatives. This becomes a classic rearrangement principle: pairing small left endpoints with large right endpoints increases gain.
After transformation, the problem reduces to selecting points representing intervals in a way that maximizes total absolute separation under pairing constraints. The optimal structure is obtained by sorting intervals and pairing from both ends, combining smallest with largest in a greedy fashion.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Why it works
