The key difficulty is that LIS and LDS are global subsequence properties, not local ones. However, the permutation structure gives strong ordering constraints that allow us to replace these global objects with something much simpler.

This is correct because LIS and LDS are well-defined for each segment independently. The issue is complexity. There are O(n^2) subarrays, and even an O(n log n) LIS computation would lead to O(n^3 log n) behavior overall, which is far beyond limits.

The structural insight comes from understanding what the equation LIS + LDS = len + 1 actually forces. This identity is very close to the classical equality condition in the Erdős-Szekeres theorem, where equality happens only when the sequence can be decomposed into two monotone structures in a very tight way. For permutations, this translates into a much stronger statement: a segment is valid if and only if it can be decomposed into two monotone chains that “fit perfectly”, which happens exactly when the segment behaves like a union of two increasing runs that interleave in a controlled way.

Rewriting the condition reveals that such segments are precisely those where the relative order of elements forms a structure with at most one “turning region” when viewed through positions of values. This reduces the problem to tracking how values appear relative to indices and counting segments where the minimum and maximum interact in a constrained way.

A standard way to exploit this is to fix a position and expand while maintaining the maximum and minimum value positions seen so far. The segment remains valid as long as the positions of current maximum and minimum do not create more than one change in monotonic structure. This transforms the problem into a two-pointer sweep where validity can be checked incrementally in O(1) using tracked extrema and their relative ordering.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process each test case independently.

  1. Replace values by their positions in the permutation if needed, then consider the array directly as a sequence of distinct integers.
  2. Fix a left endpoint l and initialize current segment statistics. We track the minimum value, maximum value, and their positions in the current window.
  3. Expand the right endpoint r from l to n, updating the minimum and maximum as we include a new element.

  5. To test this efficiently, we maintain the positions of minimum and maximum. The segment [l, r] is valid if and only if the interval between these two positions is consistent with a single alternation structure, which can be checked using a small number of state transitions as r grows.
  6. We count every r for which the segment remains valid for fixed l.
  7. Move l forward and repeat, updating tracked state in amortized O(1).

Why the incremental check works is that when extending r, only comparisons with the new element are introduced. The existing structure of min/max boundaries evolves monotonically, so we never need to recompute global sequence properties.

Why it works

The identity LIS + LDS = n + 1 characterizes sequences whose elements can be partitioned into exactly two chains under the partial order induced by value comparison. For permutations, this tight equality forces the segment to have no “excess disorder” beyond a single structural split induced by its extrema.
