Non-obvious edge cases include consecutive type 0 guests where some tables have partially occupied cells. A naive approach that just checks "any free cell" will assign a partially occupied table to a type 0 guest incorrectly. Another subtlety is tie-breaking: multiple cells may be equidistant, so sorting by x and then y is essential to match the problem’s deterministic requirement. For example, if a type 1 guest sees two equidistant free cells (1,2) and (2,1), the guest must choose (1,2).

Approaches

A brute-force approach would be to maintain a grid map of occupied cells. For each guest, perform BFS from (0,0) until a valid table cell is reached, then mark it occupied. This is correct, but the number of cells explored can grow linearly with distance, and with up to 50,000 guests, BFS per guest is far too slow.

The key insight is that tables are aligned on a regular 3×3 grid pattern. Each table cell can be mapped directly from its “table coordinates” (x, y) to real coordinates ((3x+1 or +2, 3y+1 or +2)). Moreover, Manhattan distance from (0,0) to any table cell depends only on the table coordinates and a small offset from the cell within the table. Specifically, for table coordinates (tx, ty) and cell offset (dx, dy) in {0,1}, the distance is (3*tx + dx) + (3*ty + dy).

Because the grid is infinite and structured, we can precompute the order in which table cells will be occupied. Type 0 guests occupy whole tables in 2×2 blocks, while type 1 guests can pick any free cell in any table.
