From these people, we want to pick exactly $2k$ distinct individuals and split them into $k$ disjoint pairs. Each pair is a team of two. We are first required to output the maximum $k$ that can always be guaranteed regardless of how the hidden relationships are arranged. After that, we must construct the actual $k$ pairs using at most $n$ queries.
The key difficulty is that the adversary is adaptive. Every query of the form “are $u$ and $v$ friends” can influence future answers, so we cannot rely on learning a global structure. Any strategy that tries to reconstruct the whole graph or even a large portion of it will immediately exceed the query limit or be invalidated by adaptivity.
The constraints are large, with total $n \le 10^5$ across test cases. This forces a linear or near-linear number of queries and essentially forbids anything that grows superlinearly in the number of tested pairs. Since each query reveals only one bit of information, the solution must extract structural guarantees rather than full knowledge.

A brute-force interpretation would be to query every pair, reconstruct the entire graph, and then search for a large matching entirely inside edges or entirely inside non-edges. This would require $\Theta(n^2)$ queries, which is impossible even before considering the adaptive interactor.
The key observation is that we never need to distinguish between the two types of relationships globally. We only need to construct a set of disjoint pairs that are internally consistent under one chosen interpretation. That means we can delay committing to “friend” or “non-friend” entirely while building structure.
The construction relies on the fact that any sequence of comparisons against a fixed pivot vertex partitions the remaining vertices into two dynamically maintained groups. Each query only compares a new vertex against one representative, and this is enough to enforce a consistent pairing structure without ever exploring the full graph.
The central idea is to treat the unknown relation as a binary labeling problem relative to a chosen anchor. We repeatedly compare vertices against a fixed or evolving reference, and we maintain a partition where one side is always compatible for pairing. Once enough structure accumulates, we match elements across the partition in a controlled way.
This avoids needing to know the actual edge labels between arbitrary pairs. Instead, we only rely on consistency of comparisons to a small number of representatives, which is sufficient to force at least half of the vertices into a usable matching structure.

Algorithm Walkthrough
The algorithm maintains a growing set of vertices that are still unpaired and gradually builds a structure that guarantees a large uniform matching.
We repeatedly pick an unprocessed vertex as a representative. We then compare it against other vertices that are still unprocessed, using queries to classify them into two groups depending on whether they match or differ from the representative. This classification is consistent because once a vertex is assigned relative to the representative, it never needs to be reconsidered in relation to earlier decisions.
We continue until one of the groups reaches a size large enough to support a matching of size $k$. Since every comparison costs one query and we never compare the same pair twice, the total number of queries remains linear.
Once we have a sufficiently large group, we pair vertices arbitrarily within that group. All vertices in the group are guaranteed to be consistent under the same relation type because their classification was induced through identical comparisons against the same anchor structure.
Why it works
The invariant is that every vertex placed into a group shares an identical relationship signature with respect to a fixed set of anchors. This implies that any two vertices in the same group must be consistent under the same interpretation of the relation induced by the interactor. Since the interactor must answer consistently per pair, the grouping prevents contradictory classifications. As a result, any pairing within the chosen group satisfies the requirement that all pairs are either all friends or all non-friends.

Edge Cases
For $n = 2$, the algorithm immediately forms one group containing both vertices since the single query decides their classification. Pairing is trivial and always valid regardless of answer.
For $n = 3$, one vertex remains unmatched after grouping. The algorithm still produces a valid single pair from the largest group, and the leftover vertex is ignored because it cannot contribute to a second pair under the constraint $2k \le n$.
