A subtle pitfall is assuming the graph encodes direct comparisons between labels. It does not. The edges are induced by pairs of positions in the permutation, not by value ordering directly, so naive interpretations like “degree equals rank” fail unless carefully justified.

A brute-force idea would be to try all permutations and check whether they generate the given adjacency matrix. For each candidate permutation we would rebuild the graph by iterating over all pairs of positions i < j and adding edges according to the rule, then compare with the input. This costs O(n!) permutations and O(n^2) validation per permutation, which is completely infeasible even for n = 15.
The key observation is that each vertex’s adjacency pattern encodes how it compares to others in terms of the hidden order. If we fix two vertices u and v, the graph structure ensures that exactly one of them will be “earlier” in the permutation ordering derived from the construction. The consistent way to extract this ordering is to compute, for each vertex, how many vertices it connects to in a way consistent with being smaller in the permutation. That effectively behaves like a dominance score.
Because every pair contributes exactly one directional constraint in aggregate, sorting vertices by this derived score reconstructs the permutation.
The reason this works is that the construction is equivalent to embedding a total order into a complete graph where edges represent agreement with positional ordering. That structure ensures the ranking is consistent and transitive.

Why it works
The construction defines a consistent global ordering hidden inside a symmetric adjacency matrix. Even though edges are undirected, their existence encodes whether two vertices agree with at least one ordering constraint induced by the permutation positions. This induces a monotone relationship between each vertex and its relative rank. Since all pairwise relations come from a single permutation, the resulting score ordering is transitive and uniquely identifies the permutation.
