Algorithm Walkthrough
We process scarecrows in increasing order of position and track how far the current “active influence region” can extend the crow’s forced slowdown.
- Start from the leftmost relevant scarecrow and initialize a variable representing how far the current structure can keep affecting the crow. Initially this is determined by the first scarecrow’s position.
- For each next scarecrow, check whether it lies within the current effective influence window. If it lies outside, it cannot interact with the current blocking chain, so it starts a new independent chain of influence.
- If it lies inside, it can be used to extend or reinforce the current blocking structure. We update the effective frontier to reflect that the crow will be repeatedly forced to interact with a newly positioned nearest scarecrow, delaying progress further.
- Each time we extend the frontier, we effectively convert scarecrow mobility into additional crow travel time. We accumulate this contribution as twice the time since the problem asks for 2× time.
- Continue this process until all scarecrows are processed, and finally compute the remaining distance from the last effective frontier to ℓ, which contributes linearly to the final answer.
The key idea is that each scarecrow either merges into the active blocking segment or starts a new one, and the total delay is the sum of contributions of these merged segments.
Why it works
At any moment, only the nearest scarecrow on or to the left of the crow can influence its next teleport. Since scarecrows move at bounded speed, they cannot skip over each other or create faster-than-linear reordering. This enforces that the set of active blockers evolves in a monotone fashion along the sorted positions.
The greedy process preserves the invariant that the current accumulated frontier represents the furthest position the crow can be forced to hesitate before making permanent progress. Every scarecrow either extends this frontier or is dominated by it, and no future scarecrow can retroactively improve an earlier extension. This prevents double counting and ensures the final accumulated time is minimal.
