Approaches
A direct brute force approach starts from each index and simulates all possible jumps using BFS or DFS. From a node i, we scan all j < i with a[j] > a[i] and all j > i with a[j] < a[i], pushing valid transitions.
This is correct but extremely expensive. In the worst case, every node connects to almost every other node, so each start explores $O(n)$ transitions, giving $O(n^2)$ overall.
The key observation is that the rules always move along monotonic constraints: left moves strictly increase height, right moves strictly decrease height. This implies that along any valid path, the sequence of visited heights alternates between increasing and decreasing. More importantly, every move can be interpreted as moving to a “best reachable representative” in a structured ordering of values.
We can reformulate the problem as a graph over indices where edges are defined by nearest stronger or weaker neighbors in sorted order. Instead of connecting to all valid nodes, we only need to connect to the nearest candidate in each direction that preserves reachability, because intermediate nodes are dominated by transitivity of allowed jumps.
This reduces the problem to building a structure that captures “next greater to the left” and “next smaller to the right” relations, which can be maintained using monotonic stacks or DSU-based skipping. Once this reduced graph is constructed, reachability becomes a union of components, and the answer for each node is the maximum value in its connected component.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We construct a graph implicitly using monotonic transitions and then merge reachable nodes into components.
- Compress the idea of reachability: instead of allowing jumps to any valid node, we only connect each index to the nearest valid candidate in each direction. The reason is that any farther valid jump can be decomposed through intermediate valid steps without changing reachability endpoints.

The reason this works is that the alternating monotonic movement always collapses into a structure where any long path is equivalent to a sequence of “nearest feasible expansions.” Once these are linked, DSU ensures full closure under reachability.
Why it works
Every valid move strictly changes height in a direction consistent with index movement. Because of strict inequalities, any non-nearest jump can be replaced by a chain of nearest valid jumps without skipping over an intermediate obstruction. This creates a transitive closure where local extremal transitions already encode full reachability. DSU then captures connected components of this closure, and within a component every node can be reached from every other via alternating monotonic steps.

The DSU structure is used purely as a connectivity compressor. Each union corresponds to an immediate structural reachability implied by monotonic constraints. The stack construction ensures we never miss a necessary connection while avoiding quadratic comparisons.
The final pass is just grouping: once components are formed, each query becomes a constant-time lookup.
A subtle implementation detail is that we do not explicitly build adjacency lists. That would risk O(n^2) memory in worst cases. Instead, unions are performed directly during stack processing.
