We start by choosing exactly one city as the initial position at time 1, and then each subsequent time step we expand our conquered territory by taking one new city that is adjacent to the already conquered segment. Over time, the conquered set always remains a contiguous segment.
The process is essentially an interval growth process: starting from a single index, at each step we can extend the interval by one unit either to the left or to the right. By time t we must ensure that every city that has been included in the interval up to that point has been conquered no later than its allowed deadline.
We are asked, for each starting position, whether there exists some sequence of left and right expansions that respects all deadlines. The output is simply how many starting positions are valid.
The constraint that the total n over all test cases is at most 2·10^5 implies that any solution should be close to linear or at worst n log n per test. A naive simulation that tries to explore all possible expansion orders from each starting position would be exponential, since at every step we can choose left or right. Even greedy simulation per start that tries both directions independently would still be O(n^2) overall and fail.
A more subtle issue is that deadlines constrain not only whether a city is reached, but also when it is reached relative to the expansion order. A naive left-first or right-first strategy can easily fail even when a mixed strategy succeeds.
A typical failing intuition is assuming that if we always expand toward the closer tight-deadline city first, we are safe. For example, consider a segment where the minimum deadlines are in the middle but slightly larger deadlines are on the sides; choosing a greedy direction locally can block access to a tighter deadline on the opposite side later.
Another subtle pitfall is treating the problem as independent left and right chains without accounting for the fact that time is shared between both directions. A city on the left and a city on the right compete for early time steps even though they are on different sides of the start.
Approaches
A brute-force approach would fix a starting city and simulate all possible ways to expand the interval. At each step we have at most two choices, so this forms a binary tree of depth n. Even pruning by deadlines does not significantly reduce worst-case complexity, because adversarial inputs can allow many valid partial expansions before eventually failing. This leads to exponential behavior and is unusable.
We need to exploit structure. The key observation is that the conquered set is always a contiguous segment, so the only state we need is how far we have expanded left and right from the starting point. At time t, if we have expanded l steps to the left and r steps to the right, then t = 1 + l + r, and the constraint for any city at offset x on the left or right is that it must be conquered by the time we reach its offset in the expansion order.
The core insight is to reverse the perspective: instead of thinking about expansion order, we think about assigning each city a “time budget” determined by how far it is from the starting point. If we fix a starting position i, then any city j must be assigned a time equal to the number of expansions needed before it is included, which depends on whether we reach it via left-first or right-first expansion.
This reduces the problem to checking whether we can interleave left and right expansions so that all positions satisfy their deadlines. This can be transformed into a constraint on prefixes of the left side and right side: for each distance d, among all cities at distance ≤ d on either side, enough of them must have deadlines ≥ d+1.
This structure suggests a two-sided sweep: for a fixed start, we can precompute for each radius how many “bad” cities exist that would violate a given expansion speed, and check feasibility by ensuring that at every radius, the number of cities with deadline less than or equal to current time does not exceed what can be safely deferred.
The standard solution reduces this to maintaining two monotone sweeps (left and right) and verifying a condition equivalent to: when expanding outward layer by layer, the k-th expansion step must not be forced onto a city whose deadline is smaller than k+1.
We can compute for each starting point how far we can expand in both directions while respecting constraints, and check whether the total reachable segment covers all cities.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the reasoning at a fixed starting city i and determine whether it can “consume” all cities.
- For a fixed starting city i, split the array into a left side and a right side relative to i. We will treat distances from i outward.
- For each side, define a sequence of deadlines sorted by distance from i. The left side gives cities i-1, i-2, ..., and the right side gives i+1, i+2, ....
- The expansion process takes exactly one new city per time step, so at time t we have conquered t-1 additional cities beyond the start. This means that any city at distance d from i must be conquered no later than time d+1.
- We simulate the growth outward in “layers” d = 1, 2, ..., where layer d contains up to two cities: one at i-d and one at i+d.
- For each layer d, we check whether the cities that appear at that layer can be scheduled within their deadlines given that at most d+1 steps have occurred when they are taken. If both sides exist at distance d, we conceptually decide an order, but feasibility depends only on whether deadlines allow either ordering.
- The key simplification is to track the earliest violation: as we expand outward, if at any distance d both sides contain cities with deadlines less than d+1, we cannot postpone both sufficiently, causing a forced violation. The algorithm therefore tracks whether the “tight” constraints can be interleaved.
- We precompute feasibility using a greedy feasibility check that grows outward and always prioritizes placing tighter deadline cities as early as possible.
Why it works
The process can be viewed as scheduling 2n intervals (each city contributes a constraint “must be scheduled by time a[i]”) into a single sequence defined by outward expansion. At any radius d, the number of available slots is exactly 2d+1 (including the start), and the only real constraint is whether among the first k slots we have at most k cities whose deadlines are < k+1. The greedy outward expansion maintains the invariant that whenever a conflict arises, it is detected at the smallest radius where a deadline becomes impossible to satisfy. Because the structure is linear and expansion is monotone, any violation cannot be repaired by reordering later steps, so the greedy check is both necessary and sufficient.

A subtle implementation detail is that the correctness hinges on interpreting expansion as layer-wise scheduling, not independent side checks. The left and right scans are symmetric and must both be consistent with the same time indexing starting from 1 at the origin.
