Another subtle issue is that the answer does not depend on values in the set directly but on consecutive runs of absent values. A naive set or balanced tree only tracks membership, not contiguous empty segments, so it cannot answer the query efficiently without recomputing structure from scratch.

Edge cases appear when the set is sparse or dense. If the set is empty, every query returns 1. If the set is almost full except occasional gaps, the answer depends on merging across insertions and deletions. A particularly tricky case is when a gap of length $k$ spans across a deletion boundary, meaning two smaller gaps combine into a valid answer only after removal.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is straightforward. Maintain the set in a hash structure and, for each query, scan from $d = 1$ upward, checking whether all values in $[d, d+k-1]$ are absent. This requires checking up to $k$ positions per start, and up to 2e6 starts in the worst case, giving $O(n \cdot 2e6)$ behavior per query. This collapses immediately under the constraints.

A more structured view comes from switching perspective: instead of tracking present elements, we track empty segments. The query is asking for the first position where a zero segment of length at least $k$ starts.

This suggests maintaining a binary array where 1 means present and 0 means absent, and supporting two operations: point flips and queries for the leftmost occurrence of a zero-run of length $k$. This is a classic segment tree augmentation problem.

Each segment tree node stores three values: the longest consecutive zero segment inside the interval, the length of the zero prefix, and the length of the zero suffix. These three are sufficient to merge intervals and detect runs that cross boundaries. With this information, we can both update single points and search for the first valid starting position using a guided descent.

The key improvement is that we never explicitly enumerate intervals. Instead, the segment tree compresses all contiguous structure information so queries become logarithmic-time searches over precomputed run statistics.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We build a segment tree over the range $[1, 2 \cdot 10^6 + 2]$, where each position initially starts as empty.

Each leaf represents a single integer position. A value of 1 means the number is in the set, so it contributes zero to empty segments. A value of 0 means it is absent and contributes one to empty segments.

1. Build the initial structure

We mark all initial elements of the set as present (value 1). All other positions are implicitly zero. This gives us a correct initial segmentation of empty intervals.

2. Store interval statistics in each node

For every segment tree node, we maintain three quantities: the longest consecutive run of zeros inside the segment, the longest prefix of zeros, and the longest suffix of zeros.

These are sufficient because any long zero segment is either fully contained in the left child, fully contained in the right child, or formed by combining suffix of left and prefix of right.

3. Handle insert and delete operations

For an insertion, we set the corresponding position to 1. For deletion, we set it back to 0. Each update only affects $O(\log n)$ nodes in the tree, and we recompute the stored values on the path back to the root.

4. Answer a k-load query

To find the smallest valid $d$, we descend the segment tree from the root.

At a node, we check whether the left child already contains a zero segment of length at least $k$. If so, the answer lies entirely in the left subtree, so we move left.

If not, we check whether a valid segment crosses the boundary between left and right children. This happens when the suffix of the left child plus the prefix of the right child is at least $k$. In that case, the answer starts at the boundary position inside the left child.

If neither condition holds, the valid segment must be in the right subtree, so we move right.

We continue until reaching a leaf, which gives the smallest starting position.

Why it works

The segment tree stores exact information about all possible contiguous zero segments inside each interval. Any candidate answer must either lie entirely in the left half, entirely in the right half, or cross the midpoint. The stored prefix, suffix, and best-run values fully characterize all three cases, so every decision during the descent is forced by correct interval structure. No candidate segment can be skipped because every possible length-$k$ zero block is represented in one of these three forms at every split.

The query procedure never scans linearly. It only descends the tree based on whether the left side already contains a valid run or whether a run crosses the midpoint, guaranteeing logarithmic time.

A fully empty structure is handled correctly because every node reports maximum zero segments equal to its full length. Any query immediately resolves to 1 since the root already satisfies any $k$.

A fully filled structure behaves oppositely. Every node has zero-length zero segments, so no prefix, suffix, or middle segment ever satisfies $k$, and the query correctly walks to the rightmost boundary where the empty tail beyond the domain implicitly provides the answer.

When deletions create two adjacent gaps separated by a single removed element, the crossing rule correctly merges suffix and prefix, ensuring that newly formed segments are detected immediately without re-scanning the array.
