The key difficulty is that squaring changes values in a highly non-linear way. Small numbers can grow slowly or quickly depending on their magnitude, and once values increase they can easily break ordering with neighbors. We are not free to reorder elements, so every operation only locally transforms one position while affecting global ordering constraints.
The constraints are large: the total number of elements across all test cases can reach 2 · 10^5. This immediately rules out any solution that tries to simulate all possible sequences of squarings per element or explores states explicitly. Any approach must be close to linear or near-linear per test case. Since each element can be squared multiple times, the real complexity is not just array size but also the growth behavior of values.
A subtle issue arises when squaring cannot help at all. For example, if we have a decreasing pair like [5, 4], squaring 4 gives 16 which fixes the local inversion, but in a longer chain it might break earlier constraints. Worse, sometimes no sequence of squarings can resolve contradictions in ordering dependencies, and we must detect this early.
Another important edge case is when numbers are already large. If an element becomes too large relative to neighbors, further squaring only makes it worse, potentially preventing feasibility. A naive approach that always “fixes local inversions greedily” can easily over-smooth one region and break another.
Approaches
A brute-force interpretation would treat each index as having an infinite sequence of possible values:
a[i], a[i]^2, a[i]^(2^2), a[i]^(2^3), and so on. We could imagine searching over all choices of how many times each position is squared, then checking whether the resulting array is non-decreasing and minimizing total operations.
This is correct in principle, but completely infeasible. Even if we cap the number of squarings per element at a small constant, say up to 60 (since values explode quickly), the state space becomes 60^n in the worst case, which is impossible. Even dynamic programming over positions fails because each position depends on an unbounded range of possible previous values.
The key observation is that each element is not independent in an arbitrary way. For a fixed element, we never need to consider all powers of squaring blindly. Instead, what matters is the smallest number of squarings required so that the element becomes at least as large as the previous chosen value. Once we decide how many times an element is squared, its final value is fixed, and we only propagate constraints forward.
This suggests a greedy left-to-right construction. At each position, we maintain the minimum value allowed by the previous position. For the current element, we try to apply squaring until it is large enough to satisfy non-decreasing order. However, we also must ensure we do not overshoot in a way that makes it impossible for future elements to catch up.
The crucial structure is monotonic growth: squaring always increases values (for integers ≥ 2), and grows extremely fast. This means each element has only a very small number of meaningful states before it exceeds all future constraints. We can therefore simulate, per element, the minimal number of squarings required to reach a threshold, and propagate that threshold forward.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process the array from left to right while maintaining the minimum allowed value for the current position, derived from the previous element after its chosen transformations.
- Initialize a counter for operations and set the current required lower bound as the first element. The first element does not need adjustment because there is no previous constraint.
- For each next element, compare it with the current lower bound. If it is already large enough, we accept it without any operation and update the lower bound to this value.
- If it is smaller than the lower bound, we repeatedly square it until it becomes at least equal to the lower bound. Each squaring counts as one operation.
- If during this process the value stops changing or grows too slowly to ever reach the required bound (for example, 0 or 1 cases), we conclude impossibility.
- Once the element is adjusted, we set the new lower bound to this adjusted value and continue.
The subtle point is that squaring is not linear growth. We never try to “match exactly”; we only care about crossing the threshold. The number of squarings needed is uniquely determined by how fast the value grows under repeated squaring.
Why it works
The algorithm maintains the invariant that after processing position i, we have chosen a valid transformed value for a[i] that is the smallest possible value achievable under allowed operations while still satisfying non-decreasing order up to i. This is crucial because choosing a larger-than-necessary value only makes future constraints harder to satisfy.
At each step, we never revisit earlier decisions. This is safe because any earlier element only constrains future elements through its final value, and increasing that final value would only increase the difficulty for later positions. Therefore, local minimal feasibility implies global optimality.

The code follows a direct simulation of the greedy strategy. The variable prev stores the last chosen value in the transformed array. For each element, if it already satisfies the ordering constraint, we accept it immediately. Otherwise, we repeatedly square it until it crosses prev, counting operations along the way.
A subtle implementation detail is the handling of values 0 and 1. Since squaring does not increase them, they can never reach a larger required bound, so we immediately mark the situation as impossible. In this problem constraints, values are positive, but guarding against stagnation ensures correctness in extended variants.
The loop uses Python’s else clause on the for-loop to distinguish successful completion from early termination due to impossibility.

Edge Cases
A key edge case is when values become 1. Since 1 squared remains 1, any requirement larger than 1 makes the instance impossible. For example, input [1, 2] is fine, but [2, 1, 2] may fail depending on propagation because the middle element cannot grow if constrained incorrectly.
Another subtle case is when early large squaring creates overshoot. For instance, if we have [2, 3, 2], the second element might be squared unnecessarily if we do not carefully minimize operations, which then forces the third element to square multiple times. The greedy strategy avoids this by always choosing the minimal squaring needed at each step.
A third case is long decreasing chains like 10010 ... 10000. These stress repeated squaring counts but remain safe due to exponential growth ensuring termination in a small number of steps per element.
