Whenever two segments overlap, we imagine an edge between them whose weight is the absolute difference of their associated values.
This defines an undirected weighted graph where vertices are segments and edges exist only between overlapping segments. The task is to compute the total weight of a minimum spanning tree of this graph, or determine that no spanning tree exists because the graph is disconnected.
The constraints make the structure very large. There can be up to $5 \cdot 10^5$ segments across all test cases, and endpoints can be as large as $10^9$. This immediately rules out any solution that tries to explicitly build all edges between intersecting pairs, because in the worst case all segments overlap and the graph becomes complete, giving $O(n^2)$ edges.
A naive Kruskal approach would require enumerating all overlapping pairs, which is impossible at scale. Even checking overlaps pairwise leads to quadratic behavior.
A key edge case arises when segments form multiple disconnected overlap clusters. For example, if one group of segments lies in $[1,2]$ and another in $[100,200]$, with no overlap between groups, the answer must be $-1$ even if both groups are internally connected. A naive implementation that assumes connectivity after sorting by left endpoint can miss this.
Another subtle case is when overlaps are only chained. Segment A overlaps B, B overlaps C, but A does not overlap C. The graph is still connected, but any solution that only connects “adjacent in sorted order” without maintaining active overlap structure can miss valid edges needed for correctness.

In the worst case, if all segments overlap, the number of edges is $\binom{n}{2}$, which is about $10^{11}$ when $n = 5 \cdot 10^5$. Even detecting overlaps would require quadratic scanning or interval queries over all pairs.
The structural breakthrough is to reinterpret the graph. The weight between two nodes depends only on $|a_i - a_j|$, independent of geometry, while edges exist only when intervals overlap. This combination suggests we want to connect each connected overlap component in a way that minimizes differences in $a$, not enumerate all edges.
The crucial observation is that inside any set of segments that mutually overlap in a connected way, the MST over absolute differences behaves like a classical result: if we sort nodes by $a_i$, then connecting them in order produces a minimum spanning tree over a complete graph with weights $|a_i - a_j|$. The only complication is that not all pairs are allowed, only those within the same overlap-connected component.
So the real task becomes identifying connected components in the “interval intersection graph”, and within each component, sorting by $a_i$ and summing adjacent differences.
The remaining difficulty is computing connected components efficiently without explicitly building edges. This is handled by sweeping intervals and maintaining active overlap groups using a DSU-like structure or a union strategy based on interval merging.
We maintain active segments ordered by their current right endpoint and unify segments that overlap as we sweep by left endpoint. Once we have all components, we process each independently.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We transform the problem into building connected components under interval intersection, then computing MST cost inside each component using sorted $a_i$.
- Sort all segments by their left endpoint.
This ensures we process intervals in increasing order of where they start, allowing us to track overlap using a rolling active structure. 2. Maintain a data structure that tracks the current active merged interval of each component.
For each new segment, we compare it with active components whose maximum right endpoint is still ≥ current left endpoint. 3. If a segment overlaps an active component, we merge it into that component using DSU.

As we sweep, we maintain a current “frontier” of components ordered by their right endpoints. When a component’s right endpoint is fully behind the current left endpoint, it is closed. 5. Why it works
The interval intersection relation defines connected components that are exactly the connected components of an interval graph. Any two nodes in the same component can be connected through a chain of overlaps. This guarantees that DSU-based merging over overlapping active intervals correctly captures all connectivity.
Inside one component, the induced edge weights form a metric space under absolute difference on $a_i$. For such graphs, the MST is always formed by sorting points and connecting consecutive elements, since any longer edge is dominated by a sum of intermediate edges. This is the classic property of MSTs on the line metric.
Thus we reduce the original graph into independent line-metric MST problems.

The implementation first sorts segments by their left endpoint to enable sweep-style processing. The DSU structure maintains connectivity induced by overlaps.
