We are allowed to perform a single kind of structural operation: pick a non-root node v in either tree, delete v, and reconnect all its children directly to v’s parent. In effect, v is removed and its incident edges are bypassed so that its children move one level up.
A tree is considered identical if, after performing deletions on both trees, the remaining vertex set is exactly the same and every remaining vertex has the same parent in both trees.
So the task is to remove a minimum number of vertices across both trees so that the induced rooted structures on the remaining vertices match exactly.
The key difficulty is that deleting a node is not a local cost, it changes the parent structure of its entire subtree, so the decision of which nodes to remove interacts across the tree.
The constraint n ≤ 40 is the strongest signal in the problem. Any solution that tries to track states over subsets of nodes is plausible, because 2^40 is borderline but manageable with meet-in-the-middle or pruning, while anything polynomial in n with heavy DP over subsets or permutations of nodes is too large if it involves n! or n^2 2^n transitions.
A naive intuition would be to think we choose a subset of nodes to keep, and then check whether both trees induce the same parent relationships after compressing deleted nodes. However, the compression effect makes parent relationships depend on ancestors that may or may not be deleted, which breaks simple subset consistency checks unless carefully modeled.
A subtle edge case arises when a node is deleted in one tree but not the other. This is allowed because equality only concerns the final remaining vertex set. However, deleting a node changes parent relations of all its descendants, so inconsistent deletion patterns can create indirect mismatches.
For example, suppose in tree A node x is kept but its parent is deleted, so x gets reattached higher. In tree B, the parent might still exist, giving x a different parent in the induced structure. A naive check that only compares original parents would fail here.
Another failure mode is assuming that only directly removed nodes matter. In reality, deleting an internal node implicitly “contracts” edges, so equivalence is about whether both trees induce the same contracted forest after removing selected nodes.
Approaches
The brute-force viewpoint is to try every subset S of vertices to keep. For each subset, we simulate the deletion process in both trees: repeatedly compress away deleted nodes and compute the induced parent mapping on S. If both induced structures match, we compute cost as n minus |S| and take the minimum.
This is correct because it directly matches the definition of equality after operations. The problem is that there are 2^n subsets, and for each subset we would need to recompute ancestor skipping or parent lifting, which is at least O(n) per node, giving roughly O(n 2^n), which for n = 40 is far too large.
The key insight is to reverse the perspective. Instead of thinking about deletions, think about the final structure of each node in the surviving set. Each node that survives must have the same parent in both trees, but that parent is not necessarily its original parent, it is the first ancestor that is also kept.
So each tree induces, for a chosen subset S, a “compressed parent function” where parent_S(v) is the nearest ancestor of v in S. The problem becomes finding the largest S such that these induced parent functions agree for both trees.
This suggests a meet-in-the-middle approach over a rooted decomposition. Since n ≤ 40, we split vertices into two halves and enumerate all subsets in each half, but subsets alone are not sufficient, because parent relationships cross halves.
Instead, we root both trees at 1 and observe that any valid final structure corresponds to a forest induced by a set S where consistency constraints are local along root-to-node paths. We encode states by tracking, for each subset, how nodes in that subset connect upward to the nearest kept ancestor, and we hash these induced structures.
We compute, for both trees, all subset signatures: for each subset S, we compute its compressed parent representation. We then match signatures between the two trees and maximize |S|.
The heavy lifting is precomputing for each subset how parent lifting behaves, which can be done with bitmask DP over subsets and parent pointers.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We reframe each tree as a parent array and precompute, for every node, its ancestors up to the root. This allows us to compute “next kept ancestor” efficiently for any subset.
- Represent a subset S as a bitmask over n nodes. For each node v, we want to determine its effective parent in S, which is the first ancestor of v (in the original tree) that is also in S. This captures exactly what repeated deletions do.
- For a fixed tree, precompute ancestor lists or directly use parent pointers so that we can climb upward until we hit a node in S. Since n is small, repeated upward checks per subset are acceptable.
- For each subset S, compute a canonical signature of the induced compressed tree. This can be done by recording, for every v in S except the root, its effective parent in S, then encoding this as a tuple or hashing it into a single value.
- Do step 3 separately for both trees. For tree A, store a map from signature to maximum subset size achieving it. This is important because multiple subsets may produce the same compressed structure.
- For tree B, compute the same signature for each subset and check whether it exists in tree A’s map. If it does, we update the answer with the sum of sizes or equivalently just maximize the common achievable subset size.
- The final answer is n minus the maximum size of a subset S that yields identical compressed structures in both trees.
The reason this works is that the deletion process is fully characterized by the induced ancestor-closure of the kept set. Once S is fixed, both trees deterministically produce a unique parent structure on S. If those structures match, then S is feasible; if not, no sequence of operations can reconcile them because operations only contract edges upward and cannot reorder ancestry outside this induced closure.

The core of the solution is the function that enumerates all subsets and computes their compressed parent representation. For each subset, we explicitly simulate how every node would “climb” upward until it finds a surviving ancestor, which directly models the deletion operation semantics.
The signature is constructed only from surviving nodes, pairing each node with its effective parent inside the subset. This makes the representation invariant under the order of deletions.
We then match identical signatures between both trees, because identical signatures correspond exactly to subsets that yield the same final tree structure.
The final answer subtracts the best achievable kept set size from n, since each deletion reduces the number of kept nodes by one.

For the same subset in tree B, effective parents differ because node 4’s parent is 2, which may or may not be removed, changing the lifted structure. This mismatch shows that S is not valid.
A valid subset emerges when deletions align both induced ancestor structures, and the maximum such subset size turns out to be 1, giving answer 4.

Edge Cases
A key edge case is when both trees are identical but contain deep chains. In that situation, every subset produces identical signatures in both trees, and the algorithm must correctly allow full matching. For input where both parent arrays are all 1, every node directly attaches to the root, so any subset is consistent and the best answer is zero deletions.
Another edge case is when a node’s parent is deleted but its grandparent is not. In that case, effective parent lifting must skip multiple levels, not just one step. The upward loop in the implementation ensures correctness because it continues until an active ancestor is found.
A third case is when only the root remains. Since the root is always fixed and cannot be deleted, every valid subset must include node 1. The masking logic respects this by treating node 1 separately and never assigning it a lifted parent, ensuring that all signatures remain well-formed even for single-node subsets.
