If we try to simulate the game directly, we would maintain the current array and recursively try Alice’s swaps and Bob’s deletions. Even if we restrict Alice to “use swaps only when helpful,” the branching factor remains too large. Each round still branches into two possibilities for Bob, and Alice has $O(n^2)$ swap choices. Over $k \le 20$ rounds this becomes completely infeasible.
The structural insight comes from reversing perspective: Bob is not just deleting halves arbitrarily, he is selecting a path in a complete binary partition tree of depth $k$. This turns the problem into a layered assignment: at depth $t$, there are $2^t$ segments, each of size $2^{k-t}$. Bob picks one segment; Alice wants to maximize the minimum possible maximum over all segments, given that she can redistribute values progressively across layers.
The key reduction is that only the ordering of values matters, not their positions. At each level, Bob forces a choice among pairs of blocks, so the game behaves like repeatedly taking minimum over pairs, while Alice tries to inject large values into all “dangerous” branches as long as she still has swap freedom.
This leads to a greedy viewpoint: after sorting values, we consider how many values Alice can “protect” across levels. At depth $t$, Bob effectively forces the answer to depend on the largest value among a collection of $2^t$ representative candidates, but Alice can ensure that the top $t$ largest values are distributed so that at least one survives every pruning sequence.
A more concrete way to see it is this: after $t$ rounds, Bob has selected a path through $t$ binary choices. Each value can survive only if Alice manages to route it into all relevant halves along that path. The optimal strategy reduces to tracking how many top values can be guaranteed to remain feasible after $t$ adversarial cuts. Algorithm Walkthrough
We reinterpret the array as being embedded in a complete binary tree of height $k$, where each leaf is a value, and each internal node represents a segment. Each level groups adjacent segments into larger ones.
- Build a structure where level 0 consists of individual elements, and each next level merges pairs of segments. Each segment keeps track of its maximum value. This reflects what Bob could force to survive if Alice does nothing.
- For level 1, we compute maxima of every pair of adjacent elements. This gives the best possible value in each segment of size 2. The reason this works is that after one cut, only one of the two halves survives, so only maxima per pair matter.
- Continue merging upward: at level $i$, each segment represents a block of size $2^i$, and its value is the maximum possible value that could survive if that block alone remains after $i$ deletions.
- However, Alice’s swaps allow her to redistribute values between blocks before each deletion, so we do not only take raw segment maxima. Instead, we simulate the best guarantee Alice can enforce: at each level, she can ensure that the top remaining candidates are spread across segments so that Bob cannot eliminate all of them simultaneously.
- We maintain a multiset-like process: start with all values sorted in descending order. For $t$ rounds, Alice can “protect” up to $2^t$ values from being simultaneously eliminated by Bob’s path selection.
- At each $t$, the answer becomes the maximum value among the $2^t$-th strongest guaranteed survivors, which corresponds to selecting the $2^t$-th largest value that can be embedded into every possible surviving subtree after $t$ splits.

Why it works
The key invariant is that after $t$ rounds, Bob’s choices partition the array into $2^t$ disjoint segments determined by a depth-$t$ binary decision path. Alice’s swaps allow her to rearrange values between segments between cuts, but she cannot influence Bob’s final path choice once values are assigned to segments at that level.
So the game reduces to a coverage problem: Alice must assign large values across segments so that no matter which path Bob selects, at least one sufficiently large value survives in the chosen segment. Since each level doubles the number of segments, the number of values Alice can reliably “spread” also grows exponentially with $t$. This exponential matching between depth and coverage is exactly why the answer depends only on $2^t$ largest structural guarantees rather than full permutation dynamics.

The loop over $i$ corresponds directly to increasing depth. For each $i$, we compute how many positions Alice can control, which is $2^i$, and we map that to an index in the sorted array. The important subtlety is that we never simulate swaps or deletions explicitly. Instead, we collapse the game into a rank-based selection problem driven by exponential growth of Bob’s branching power.
