The network is a tree, so initially there is exactly one simple path between every pair of computers. Each edge, when put into emergency mode, becomes a directed constraint: one endpoint must come before the other in a global ordering of all nodes.
A permutation of all nodes is valid if every directed edge points forward in that permutation. In other words, we are looking at the directed version of the tree induced by choosing directions, and we want a permutation that respects all directions. A permutation that respects all edges is simply a topological ordering of that directed graph.
The key quantity is not just whether a valid ordering exists, but whether it is unique. If there are multiple valid topological orders, the network is considered vulnerable. We are allowed to add directed edges to force the ordering to become unique, and we want to minimize how many edges we add.
The input size reaches 100,000 nodes, so any solution must be essentially linear or linearithmic. Anything involving recomputing topological orderings or testing uniqueness repeatedly in a naive way will be too slow because even a single $O(n^2)$ construction is already infeasible.
A subtle edge case is a path-like tree. If the tree is already a chain, then without extra edges there are exactly two possible topological orders depending on direction choices along the path structure. Another problematic case is a star: one center with many leaves, where the ordering among leaves is completely unconstrained, producing factorially many valid permutations unless additional constraints are introduced.
The most important hidden failure mode is assuming that any directed tree automatically has a unique topological order. That is false: even a fully oriented tree typically still has many valid permutations unless every branching ambiguity is eliminated.
Approaches
A brute-force perspective starts by interpreting the problem literally: we want to count how many topological orders exist after choosing directions on the tree edges and adding new directed edges. For a fixed directed graph, counting topological orders is equivalent to counting linear extensions of a partial order, which is #P-complete in general. Even deciding uniqueness is already expensive if done directly by trying swaps or repeatedly recomputing constraints.
A naive attempt might try adding edges greedily and checking whether the resulting DAG has a unique topological order. A standard uniqueness check for a DAG uses Kahn’s algorithm: whenever the queue has size more than one, multiple choices exist, hence multiple orders. Repeating this after every added edge leads to at least $O(n^2)$ behavior in worst cases, since each check is $O(n)$ and we may add $O(n)$ edges.
The key structural observation is that the original graph is a tree, so the only source of non-uniqueness comes from independent choices at branching points. In a tree, uniqueness of topological order corresponds to the existence of a total order consistent with all edges that leaves no pair of nodes incomparable. That means every pair of nodes must be ordered by constraints induced by directed paths.
The core idea is to turn the tree into a structure where exactly one Hamiltonian path of constraints remains possible. This is achieved by ensuring that the directed constraints form a chain-like structure in the condensation sense, which in a tree reduces to forcing the graph to behave like a directed path covering all nodes.
This leads to a much simpler target: we want to enforce a structure where the directed graph has exactly one Hamiltonian path consistent with all edges. In a tree, this can be achieved by rooting the tree and then adding edges that connect every node to enforce a single linear order consistent with a chosen traversal. The minimal way to do this is to take a diameter path of the tree and orient constraints so that all nodes are forced to lie on or respect that path ordering.
The final reduction is that the answer depends only on the diameter endpoints of the tree. By anchoring the ordering between these endpoints, we can force all other nodes into a single consistent insertion position, and a small number of added edges is sufficient to eliminate all alternative interleavings.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Compute any node as a starting point and run a BFS or DFS to find the farthest node $A$. This identifies one endpoint of the tree diameter. The reason this works is that in a tree, the farthest node from an arbitrary root must lie on a diameter.
- Run a second BFS or DFS from $A$ to find the farthest node $B$, which gives the other endpoint of the diameter. This path $A \rightarrow B$ becomes the backbone that will define the unique ordering.
- Compute parent pointers and distances from $A$ during the BFS. This allows reconstructing the diameter path explicitly by walking back from $B$ to $A$.
- Treat the diameter path as a forced chain. The goal is to ensure that every other node is constrained relative to this chain in a consistent way, so that no two nodes can be swapped without violating at least one directed constraint.
- For every node not on the diameter path, connect it with a directed edge to the closest point on the diameter in a consistent direction along the path order from $A$ to $B$. This forces each subtree to attach uniquely into the global order.
- Output all such edges. The number of edges added is exactly the number of nodes not on the diameter path minus any already implicitly constrained nodes, which simplifies to a linear expression based on the structure.
Why it works
The original tree admits branching points that allow independent permutations of subtrees, which directly corresponds to multiple valid topological orders. The diameter path provides a spine that defines a strict total order of a subset of nodes. Every remaining node is attached in a way that forces it into a unique position relative to that spine. Since every subtree is anchored to exactly one position on the spine, no two nodes remain incomparable. This removes all degrees of freedom in the partial order, leaving exactly one linear extension.

The code begins by building the adjacency list of the tree. It then uses BFS twice to extract a diameter endpoint. The first BFS finds a farthest node from an arbitrary root, and the second BFS from that node finds the opposite endpoint. A parent array is used to reconstruct the diameter path.

Edge Cases
