Each rule picks two endpoints $a$ and $b$, looks at the unique path between them in the tree, and then selects a special node $c$ that lies on that path. Depending on the rule type, $c$ is required to be either the smallest value node on that path or the largest value node on that path.
This converts the problem from “assign a permutation” into “ensure global consistency of many path-wise comparisons”. A minimum query means every other node on that path must have a strictly larger value than $c$. A maximum query means every other node on that path must have a strictly smaller value than $c$.
The output is any valid permutation of nodes that satisfies all such constraints, or $-1$ if no assignment exists.
The constraints are large enough that any approach that expands paths explicitly is immediately impossible. With up to $2 \cdot 10^5$ nodes and queries, even touching a path per query would already cost $O(n)$, leading to $O(nm)$ behavior in worst cases, which is far beyond any feasible limit.
A subtle failure case for naive reasoning is assuming each query only affects local ordering. For example, if a node is forced to be the minimum on a path, it is not just smaller than its immediate neighbors, but smaller than every node on that path. Two such constraints on overlapping paths can interact indirectly and create contradictions far away in the tree.
Another common pitfall is treating constraints independently. For instance, if one query enforces $c$ is minimum on path $a$-$b$, and another enforces $c$ is maximum on path $b$-$d$, the induced inequalities can conflict through shared segments of paths, even if no single edge explicitly contradicts another.
Approaches
A brute-force idea would be to directly translate each query into pairwise comparisons along the path. For a minimum query $(a,b,c)$, we would enforce $c < x$ for every node $x$ on the path. For a maximum query, we enforce $c > x$ for every node on the path. This immediately gives a directed graph of constraints, and we could attempt a topological sort.
The issue is that explicitly iterating all nodes on all paths is too slow. A single long path can already contain $O(n)$ nodes, and with $O(n)$ queries this becomes quadratic.
The key observation is that we do not need to materialize all pairwise constraints explicitly. We only need a structure that can represent “a node must be smaller/larger than all nodes on a path” efficiently. This is a classic use case for decomposing tree paths into $O(\log n)$ canonical segments using Heavy-Light Decomposition (HLD). Once a path is broken into segments, we can attach constraints to segment ranges rather than individual nodes.
We then introduce a segment-tree-like set of auxiliary nodes representing ranges over the Euler order of the tree. Each path segment can be expressed as a union of $O(\log n)$ segment tree nodes. Instead of connecting $c$ to every vertex in the segment, we connect $c$ to those segment nodes, which in turn represent all vertices in that range.
This reduces each query to $O(\log^2 n)$ constraint edges, which is efficient enough.
Finally, the problem becomes a topological ordering over a directed graph consisting of original nodes plus segment tree nodes. If the graph has a cycle, no valid permutation exists. Otherwise, any topological order gives a valid assignment.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We convert all constraints into ordering edges in a DAG.
- Root the tree at node $1$ and compute an Euler-tour ordering so every subtree corresponds to a contiguous segment. This allows us to use segment trees over the tree.
- Build a segment tree over the Euler array. Each segment tree node represents a range of vertices in the tree.

- If the query is of type 2 (maximum on path), we enforce the opposite: every node on the path must be smaller than $c$. We add directed edges from each segment tree node covering the path to $c$.
- After processing all queries, we run a topological sort on the constructed graph. If a cycle exists, output $-1$.
- Otherwise, assign values from $1$ to $n$ in the order produced by the topological sort, ignoring segment tree nodes and keeping only original tree nodes.
Why it works
Each query enforces strict inequalities between $c$ and every node on its path. The segment tree decomposition ensures that every path node is represented exactly once in a compressed form. Every constraint is translated into directed edges that preserve transitivity of “must be smaller than” relations.
Any valid assignment corresponds to a linear extension of this partial order. Conversely, any topological ordering satisfies all pairwise constraints because every node on a path is contained in exactly one segment tree interval used by the decomposition, ensuring that the extremum condition is preserved globally.

Edge Cases
A key edge case is when two queries enforce contradictory ordering through overlapping paths. In such a case, the segment DAG will contain a cycle. The algorithm detects this during topological sorting because no complete ordering over all nodes and segment nodes can be produced.
Another case is a tree that degenerates into a single chain. Here every query becomes an interval constraint over a line, and the segment tree reduction still ensures that each constraint is represented compactly without blowing up into quadratic edges.
A final case is when all constraints are of one type (all minima or all maxima). In this situation the graph becomes almost acyclic by construction, and the topological order corresponds to pushing all constrained nodes toward one side of the permutation while preserving consistency across independent paths.
