Problem Understanding
We are given an array consisting only of 1s and 2s, and the array changes over time. Between changes, we are repeatedly asked a yes/no question: whether there exists a contiguous subarray whose sum is exactly some target value.
The key difficulty is that the array is not static. After each update, a single position flips between 1 and 2, which can change many subarray sums at once. Since both the array size and number of queries can reach $10^5$, recomputing all subarray sums after each update is impossible.
The constraint structure immediately rules out any approach that enumerates subarrays per query. Even maintaining all prefix sums explicitly is not enough because updates affect all suffixes.
A subtle edge case appears when all elements are 1. In that case, every subarray sum is just its length, so we can only form sums in a continuous range. For example, with n = 5 and array [1,1,1,1,1], every sum from 1 to 5 is possible, and anything above is impossible. A naive solution that assumes “all sums up to maximum prefix sum are reachable” still works here, but it fails once 2s are introduced because 2s distort the relationship between length and sum.
Another failure mode comes from assuming that if a subarray sum is possible, then all smaller sums are also possible. This is false: a single 2 forces jumps in achievable sums depending on how many 2s are included in the subarray.
Approaches
A direct brute force approach would, for each query, enumerate all subarrays and compute their sums. This is correct but costs $O(n^2)$ per query, which becomes astronomically large under the constraints.
A slightly better idea is to precompute prefix sums and answer each query by checking all pairs $(l,r)$. Updates break this entirely, since prefix sums would need to be rebuilt after every modification.
The key structural observation is that every element contributes a base value of 1, and a 2 contributes an additional +1 on top of that baseline. If a subarray has length $L$ and contains $k$ twos, then its sum is
$$L + k.$$
So the problem becomes: can we find a subarray where the number of twos and the length satisfy $L + k = s$.
Instead of thinking in terms of arbitrary subarrays, we switch perspective and group the array by positions of 2s. Once we fix which 2s are included in a subarray, the contribution from 2s is fixed, and the only flexibility comes from how many surrounding 1s we include.
This leads to a structure where we only need to consider contiguous blocks of 2s and the 1-gaps around them. Each block gives a continuous range of achievable sums, and the final answer becomes a range membership check over all such blocks.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We compress the array by recording the positions of all 2s. Let these positions be stored in a sorted list. We also imagine virtual sentinels at positions 0 and $n+1$, which helps handle boundaries uniformly.
- We maintain the indices of all 2s in sorted order. This structure changes after each update because flipping a value may insert or delete a 2.
- We also maintain the gaps between consecutive 2s. If the positions of 2s are $p_1 < p_2 < \dots < p_m$, we define gaps

where $p_0 = 0$ and $p_{m+1} = n+1$. These gaps represent stretches of 1s. 3. For a query, instead of considering all subarrays, we consider subarrays defined by a contiguous block of 2s from index $i$ to $j$. Any valid subarray that includes exactly these 2s must lie between the previous 2 before $p_i$ and the next 2 after $p_j$. 4. The smallest subarray that contains this block is the tight span:

This fixes how many 1s are forced into the subarray. 5. The number of 2s in this subarray is fixed as $k = j - i + 1$. So the minimum achievable sum for this block is

Why it works
The key invariant is that any subarray is uniquely determined by which 2s it contains, and for a fixed set of included 2s, the sum depends only on the number of included 1s, which can be adjusted only by expanding the subarray into adjacent 1-gaps. This means every feasible configuration collapses into a contiguous interval of sums per 2-block, and no “holes” exist inside a block’s achievable range because expanding by one element always increases the sum by exactly one.

For each query, we enumerate all contiguous groups of 2s and compute the achievable sum interval using the span plus expandable boundary gaps.
The critical detail is computing the two boundary gaps correctly using sentinel positions. This avoids special casing when the block touches the beginning or end of the array.

Edge Cases
For an array consisting entirely of ones, every subarray sum equals its length, so each query reduces to checking whether the target is within $[1,n]$. The block formulation degenerates cleanly because there are zero 2s, meaning the only interval is the trivial continuous range.
For an array of all twos, every subarray sum is exactly twice its length. In this case, each block interval collapses to a single point per length, and the algorithm correctly reports only even-numbered sums as possible.
For alternating patterns like [2,1,2,1], the flexibility of expanding into 1-gaps becomes essential. The algorithm captures this by allowing boundary expansion while keeping internal 2-count fixed, ensuring that sums such as 5 and 6 both remain reachable depending on how far the subarray is extended.
