A direct simulation viewpoint treats each card as a node, and draws a directed edge from card s to card t if s can beat t. The game becomes an alternating walk on two disjoint directed graphs. From a starting Monocarp node, the outcome depends on whether Bicarp has a move, whether Monocarp has a reply, and whether the alternation can be sustained indefinitely.

A brute-force approach would, for each Monocarp starting card, simulate optimal play. At each step, the current player chooses a winning response if it exists, otherwise loses. However, each move branches over all cards that beat the previous one, so exploring the game tree quickly becomes exponential. Even if we memoize states, the state space is defined by the last played card and the current player, giving O(n+m) states per side but with dense transitions, leading to O(nm) or worse exploration.

The key simplification comes from noticing that only relative comparisons between attack and defence values matter, and the structure of winning responses depends only on whether a card exists above certain thresholds. Once we sort cards by attack, we can turn “can beat this card” into a range query over defence values.

From here, the game reduces to repeated threshold switching: from a card with defence d, the opponent can respond with any card having attack greater than d, and the best response is the one with the smallest defence among those that still beats d, because it minimizes the opponent’s future options. This greedy structure ensures that each player effectively pushes the game into a monotone region of increasing thresholds.

Once this monotonicity is observed, the entire infinite game reduces to analyzing reachability in a compressed graph of threshold states. We can precompute, for each card, its “best counter” on the other side using sorted arrays and binary search, then classify outcomes using reverse DP or graph condensation.

The final structure behaves like a two-layer directed graph where edges are determined by threshold jumps, and outcomes reduce to detecting whether the play eventually reaches a cycle (draw) or a terminal dead-end (loss).

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Sort both Monocarp’s and Bicarp’s cards by attack value. This allows us to answer “which cards can beat a given defence value” using binary search.
