After each forced jump to the next snapshot, we are allowed to traverse at most one road that exists in that snapshot before the next time jump happens. The goal is to determine the smallest prefix of the given time sequence that is sufficient to reach city n, counting the first snapshot visit as one move.

The constraints indicate that both the number of cities and total roads across all snapshots can be up to 2·10^5. This rules out any approach that recomputes connectivity or runs a shortest path per snapshot independently. Even a linear scan over all snapshots with BFS from scratch would be too slow.

The more subtle constraint is the single-edge-per-snapshot rule. This turns the problem into a layered time-expanded reachability problem where each layer contributes at most one edge traversal. A naive intuition might suggest running BFS inside each snapshot, but that fails because we are not allowed to explore arbitrarily within one snapshot.

A few important edge cases highlight the structure.

If all snapshots are empty, no movement is ever possible, so the answer is -1.

If city 1 equals city n, the answer is 1 immediately, since we are already at the destination at the first snapshot.

If a single snapshot contains a direct edge 1 to n but it appears late in the sequence, we still may not be able to reach it if earlier snapshots force us into wrong intermediate states.

Approaches

A brute-force interpretation is to simulate the process step by step along the given sequence of snapshots. At each snapshot, we know the current set of reachable cities, and from each of them we can optionally move along one outgoing edge in that snapshot. This suggests maintaining a reachable set and updating it repeatedly.

However, doing this carefully is tricky. If we try to maintain a full BFS frontier per snapshot, each snapshot update can scan all edges of that snapshot. Over k snapshots with up to 2·10^5 total edges, this already looks borderline. The real issue is that a straightforward simulation does not capture that we are effectively doing a layered shortest path over a time-expanded graph, where each snapshot corresponds to a layer and each move corresponds to consuming exactly one layer transition.

The key observation is that the state is not just a city, but the combination of current city and how many time jumps we have used. From each state, we transition to the next snapshot, optionally traversing one edge in that snapshot. This creates a DAG-like structure over layers. Instead of recomputing reachability independently at each snapshot, we propagate a frontier forward through the sequence once.

We maintain the set of cities reachable after processing each prefix of snapshots. For each snapshot, we start from the previously reachable set, and we allow exactly one edge relaxation inside that snapshot: if we are at city u, and there is an edge u-v in the current snapshot, we can reach v in the same time step. This is essentially a BFS layer expansion where each snapshot contributes exactly one relaxation step.

The important efficiency trick is to treat each snapshot independently but propagate only a binary state: reachable or not, and update it using adjacency lists of that snapshot only once. Since each edge is processed once across all snapshots, total work stays linear.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We interpret the problem as repeatedly propagating a reachable set through a sequence of time layers.

  1. Initialize a boolean array reachable of size n, with only city 1 marked as reachable. This represents being in city 1 at the first snapshot before any movement.
  2. Process snapshots in the given order. For snapshot i, we will compute a new set next_reachable based on reachable and all edges present in snapshot i.
  3. Start next_reachable as a copy of reachable. This encodes the fact that we may choose to stay in the same city during this snapshot without traversing a road.
  4. For every road (u, v) in snapshot i, if u is reachable, mark v as reachable in next_reachable, and symmetrically if v is reachable, mark u. This models the single allowed edge traversal during this snapshot.
  5. After processing all edges in snapshot i, update reachable = next_reachable.
  6. After each snapshot update, check whether city n is reachable. The first snapshot index where this happens corresponds to the minimum number of time travels needed.
  7. If we finish all snapshots without ever reaching city n, return -1.

The subtle point is that we only allow one edge traversal per snapshot, but this is naturally enforced by only propagating reachability once per snapshot. We never chain multiple edges inside the same snapshot because we do not re-expand from newly reached nodes until the next time layer.

Why it works

At any moment after processing i snapshots, reachable represents exactly the set of cities that can be occupied after i time travels, respecting the constraint that each snapshot contributes at most one edge traversal. This holds because each transition from reachable to next_reachable corresponds to either staying in place or applying exactly one edge from snapshot i. Since we never reprocess newly added nodes within the same snapshot, we prevent multi-edge chaining inside a single time layer, preserving the problem’s restriction.

Because every valid sequence of moves corresponds to exactly one propagation path through these layers, and all such transitions are considered, the first time city n appears in reachable is the minimum number of time travels required.

If we updated reachable in place, a newly reached city could incorrectly propagate through another edge in the same snapshot, violating the “at most one road per time moment” rule.
