Problem Understanding

Each camera can be hacked multiple times. A hack performed at second T disables that camera during the interval [T + 1, T + s].

The only moments that matter are the two thefts. Let the first diamond be stolen at time A and the second at time B, with A < B.

A camera watching the first diamond must be disabled at time A.

A camera watching the second diamond must be disabled at time B.

A camera watching both diamonds must either stay disabled during the whole interval from A to B, or be hacked twice, once for each theft.

The key observation is that an optimal schedule never contains idle time. Every second is either a hack or one of the two thefts. If we know how many hacks are needed, the answer is simply

(number of hacks) + 2

because the two thefts themselves also consume seconds.

The constraints are unusually small in one dimension and unusually large in another. We have at most 1500 cameras, but the camera durations are at most 2n, hence at most 3000. Any solution quadratic in the duration range is acceptable, but anything resembling an exponential search over subsets of cameras is impossible.

The difficult part is not scheduling the hacks. It is deciding which cameras can be covered by a single hack and which cameras must be hacked twice.

A subtle edge case appears when every camera watching the first diamond has very small duration.

A third trap is assuming that longer duration is always better. For a fixed distance between thefts, a type-3 camera with duration x can sometimes be covered by one hack and sometimes not. The decision depends on the chosen gap between thefts.

Approaches

A brute force approach would try to simulate all possible moments of the first theft, all possible moments of the second theft, and all possible assignments of cameras to hacks. Even after exploiting the fact that durations are at most 3000, the state space is enormous. A type-3 camera may be hacked once before the first theft, once before the second theft, or twice. With up to 1500 such cameras, exhaustive search is hopeless.

The breakthrough comes from focusing on the gap

len = B - A

between the two thefts.

Fix this value. Now every camera can be classified purely according to its duration.

For a type-1 camera, a single hack must cover the first theft.

For a type-2 camera, a single hack must cover the second theft.

For a type-3 camera with duration at least len, one hack may cover both thefts. If its duration is smaller than len, two hacks are unavoidable.

After fixing len, the problem becomes a feasibility test. We must determine whether the available durations can cover all required positions before the first theft and before the second theft.

The accepted solution processes every possible value of len. Since len never exceeds k₂ + k₃ + 1, only O(n) values need to be checked. For each value, a greedy assignment is maintained with a segment tree supporting range additions and maximum queries. The tree verifies Hall-type capacity constraints that arise when durations are interpreted as deadlines.

The resulting complexity is roughly O(n² log n), which fits comfortably for n = 1500.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Split the cameras into three groups according to their type.
  2. Sort the durations of each group.

During the sweep, some cameras move from the right side to the left side. Why it works

For a fixed distance len, every camera contributes a deadline-type constraint. The segment tree continuously checks whether every prefix of deadlines can be satisfied. The greedy rule always prefers using a type-3 camera only once because that minimizes the total number of hacks. When feasibility is violated, converting the largest eligible shared camera into a double-hacked camera is the unique repair that can improve the violated prefix. This is the same exchange argument that appears in classical deadline scheduling problems.

The sweep examines all possible distributions of type-2 cameras, and the outer loop examines all possible theft gaps. Every feasible schedule corresponds to exactly one state reached by the algorithm, and every state accepted by the segment tree corresponds to a realizable schedule. Hence the minimum reported value is optimal.

The segment tree stores the maximum prefix violation. A leaf corresponding to duration d initially contains -d. Every camera contributes +1 to all durations at least as large as the duration required to cover it. A positive value means some deadline prefix is overloaded and cannot be scheduled.

The variable used contains type-3 cameras currently covered by a single hack. When a violation appears, the greedy repair step removes the largest admissible element from used and converts that camera into a double-hacked camera. This is exactly the transition performed in the reference solution.

The most delicate implementation detail is the range update. The original solution interprets a duration d as contributing to every suffix [d, +∞). Missing the suffix update changes the meaning of the feasibility test and breaks the greedy invariant.
