Instead of iterating all $z$, we exploit that each bit behaves independently. For a fixed bit $b$, we can compute the closest node to $x$ on the path where bit $b$ appears, and similarly from $y$. These positions define where the contribution of that bit first becomes active in either OR direction.
We collect all such activation positions for all bits present in values along the path. These are the only vertices where the score can change, because between two consecutive activation points, both OR sets remain constant.
We evaluate the niceness only at these candidate vertices by recomputing OR contributions using precomputed path queries. The maximum among them is the answer.
Why it works
The OR operation only accumulates bits; it never removes them. Therefore, as we move along the path from $x$ to $y$, both $g(x, z)$ and $g(y, z)$ evolve monotonically in terms of bit inclusion. A bit contributes to the score exactly once it appears in either direction, and after that point it remains present for all subsequent vertices. This means the score function is piecewise constant along the path and can only change at vertices where some bit first becomes reachable from one endpoint. These vertices fully capture all possible increases in the objective, so checking only them preserves the maximum.
