We are given a square grid filled with bits, and the goal is to turn every cell into zero. The only allowed move flips values in a very specific geometric pattern: you pick a cell as a “center”, and it toggles itself and all cells strictly below it that lie within a growing diamond shape whose radius increases with the row distance.
If we look at the effect more closely, every operation is anchored at some cell and only influences rows below or equal to it, and within each lower row the affected columns form a symmetric interval around the chosen column, shrinking as we move downward. So each move behaves like dropping a “diamond of XOR flips” whose top vertex is the chosen cell.
The output is the minimum number of such operations required to make the whole matrix zero.
The constraint is the key signal: $n$ can be up to 3000 and there can be up to $10^5$ test cases with total $n^2$ across all tests bounded by 9 million. That forces us into essentially linear per cell processing. Anything involving trying operations per cell pair or simulating each flip naively is too slow, but a single pass per cell or per row with constant amortized work is fine.
A subtle edge case is that flipping is not local in a simple rectangular way. A naive greedy that tries to fix row by row independently will fail because an operation affects all lower rows. For example, if we try to fix row 1 completely first, we will accidentally disturb rows below and lose correctness. Similarly, treating each row independently leads to double counting flips.
The main hidden structure is that the operation is monotonic downward. Once we choose a center, it only affects rows $\ge i$. This suggests processing from bottom to top, because once a row is fixed relative to lower rows, it will never be touched again by future operations.
Approaches
A brute-force interpretation is to view each operation as a huge binary toggle mask over the matrix. Then the problem becomes selecting a minimum subset of these masks whose XOR produces the given matrix. This is essentially a linear algebra problem over a space of size $O(n^2)$ with $O(n^2)$ possible basis vectors, which is completely infeasible to solve directly.
Even a more concrete brute-force would try, for every cell, whether to apply the operation or not, leading to $2^{n^2}$ possibilities. Even greedy simulation where we repeatedly pick any remaining 1 and simulate its effect costs $O(n^3)$ per test, since each operation touches a triangular region.
The key observation is that the structure of the operation allows us to treat the grid in reverse order of rows. If we process from bottom to top, when we decide whether to fix a cell, all cells below it are already finalized. This converts the global dependency into a local decision.
Now the important structural insight: consider the effect of operations on a fixed row. Each operation centered above can affect a prefix-like segment in that row, and the overlap structure becomes linear. When sweeping upward, each row becomes an independent 1D problem where we only care about parity of already-applied operations from below. This reduces the problem to greedily fixing mismatches while accumulating influence upward.
The final simplification is that every cell either forces an operation or not based on whether it is currently 1 after considering accumulated flips from below. When we encounter a 1, we must apply an operation at that cell, because no future operation can fix it (future means above, which does not reach downward). This greedy is optimal because it resolves the lowest unresolved contradictions first, and each operation corrects exactly the forced parity at that position while propagating upward effects that are handled later.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain a working copy of the grid and process it from the bottom row to the top row.
- Start from row $n$ and move upward to row $1$. The reason is that operations only influence downward rows, so once a row is processed, it will never be affected again.
- For each cell $(i, j)$, compute its current effective value, which is the original value XORed with all effects from previously chosen operations that influence it. We do not explicitly store full influence; instead we maintain a difference structure over diagonals or simulate via accumulated toggles.
- If the effective value at $(i, j)$ is 1, we must apply an operation centered at $(i, j)$. This is forced because no future operation (above row i) can change this cell without also violating already fixed lower structure.
- When applying an operation at $(i, j)$, we update the influence so that all affected cells in rows $\ge i$ are toggled accordingly. We do this efficiently using a per-row difference array that represents the diamond shape projection.
- Continue until all cells are processed. The number of applied operations is the answer.
The reason this works is that each cell in the bottom-most unprocessed region has a unique opportunity to be fixed: only an operation centered at or below it can affect it, and since we are moving bottom-up, the only valid fix is to decide immediately.
Why it works
The invariant is that when processing row $i$, all rows below $i$ are already in a state where they are guaranteed to be final and will never be modified again. Any operation chosen in row $i$ only affects rows $\ge i$, so it cannot invalidate previous decisions.
Thus each decision at a cell is locally forced: if the current value is 1, not choosing an operation would permanently leave it incorrect, while choosing it may flip future cells but those are not yet fixed and will be resolved consistently later. This ensures that the greedy choice never blocks feasibility and always resolves the closest unresolved constraint.
