Why it works
The key invariant is that after processing column $i$, the remaining required mismatch count depends only on the current character in the second row and how many columns remain, not on the detailed history. Each decision contributes a known local cost, and every future configuration can only add a bounded number of additional mismatches (at most one per vertical edge and one per horizontal edge). Because of this bounded and decomposable structure, greedy feasibility pruning never eliminates a valid full construction if one exists, since any globally valid solution can be transformed into one consistent with the chosen prefix without changing feasibility.
