Problem Understanding
We are given a tree, and we are allowed to remove edges. After removing some edges, the remaining connected components must each consist of exactly three vertices, and each such component must itself still be a tree. In other words, the final forest must be a partition of the original tree into disjoint connected subtrees of size three.
The task is to decide whether such a partition is possible, and if it is, to output which edges must be cut to achieve it.
A key constraint is that the input size is large: the total number of vertices across all test cases is up to 200,000. Any solution that does more than linear work per test case will not pass. This immediately suggests that we should aim for an O(n) or O(n log n) traversal per tree, since anything quadratic per test case would explode in the worst case.
There is an important structural constraint hidden in the requirement. Since every final component has size 3, the total number of vertices in the tree must be divisible by 3. If it is not, no solution exists because cuts do not create or destroy vertices.
A second, more subtle issue appears in trees with low branching flexibility. Consider a star centered at node 1 with 5 leaves. Any group of three vertices must include the center or else connectivity fails. But once the center is used in one group, it becomes difficult to form additional disjoint connected triples. This kind of structure often forces failure even when n is divisible by 3.
Another failure mode arises in long paths. For a chain of length 3k, we might hope to split it into consecutive triples. That works only if cuts can isolate contiguous segments cleanly, but depending on how the grouping propagates from leaves, greedy choices may later block valid partitions. This is where a purely local strategy can fail unless it respects subtree structure.
Approaches
A brute-force idea would be to consider every possible way to partition vertices into triples and then check whether each triple forms a connected subgraph. This is equivalent to choosing groups of 3 vertices among n, which is combinatorially explosive, roughly on the order of n! / (3!)^(n/3). Even for n = 30 this is already infeasible, and here n goes up to 2e5.
A more reasonable attempt is to think in terms of building groups bottom-up. If we root the tree, we might try to collect nodes from children until we form triples and then cut. However, naive greedy accumulation can fail because a subtree may send multiple “unfinished” nodes upward, and pairing them incorrectly can block future valid groupings.
The key insight is to work with subtree states in a DFS where each node reports how many unpaired vertices it contributes upward. Since every valid group consumes exactly 3 vertices, we only need to track remainders modulo 3. Each subtree can contribute 0, 1, or 2 pending vertices to its parent. If a node ever tries to pass 3 or more, that implies we should have formed a group inside that subtree earlier.
We then greedily form triples as soon as possible inside a DFS by combining leftover nodes from children and the current node. When a triple is completed, we conceptually “close” it by cutting the edge that connects it to the rest of the tree if needed. The DFS ensures we only make local decisions once we know all child contributions.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the tree at an arbitrary node, typically 1.
- First check whether n is divisible by 3. If not, immediately return -1 because no partition into triples can exist. This avoids unnecessary traversal.
- Build adjacency lists and store edge indices, since we need to output which edges are cut later.
- Run a DFS from the root. For each node, we compute a list of “available vertices” that are not yet grouped into a complete triple inside its subtree. Each child returns at most 2 such vertices upward.
- At each node, we merge all leftover vertices from children together with the current node itself. As soon as we accumulate 3 vertices, we mark them as forming one group. This group corresponds to a valid subtree component.
- If a group spans across a child edge, we record that edge as a cut. The reason is that those vertices must be separated from the rest of the tree once the group is formed, otherwise they would connect to additional vertices and violate the fixed-size constraint.
- After processing all children, at most 2 vertices remain unpaired at the current node. These are returned to the parent as the node’s leftover state.
- At the end, if the root has any leftover vertices, the construction fails. Otherwise, all vertices are perfectly grouped into triples.
Why it works
The invariant is that every DFS call maintains a multiset of vertices that are not yet assigned to a complete triple, and this multiset always has size at most 2 per subtree boundary. Because each completed group is formed immediately when 3 vertices are available, no future decisions can invalidate it: any additional vertex entering that subtree would have to connect through an already resolved structure, which is impossible without breaking tree disjointness. This ensures that every grouping is locally optimal and globally consistent.

The code first roots the tree and stores parent relationships so that every edge can be uniquely identified by the child side. Then it processes nodes in postorder so that each subtree is fully resolved before its parent tries to use its vertices.
The leftover list is the key state carrier. For each node it stores vertices that have not yet been grouped into triples. When combining children, we simply merge these lists and repeatedly extract triples.
The important implementation detail is that edge indices are recorded from the child perspective. Whenever a vertex from a child subtree is used in a completed triple, the edge connecting it to its parent must be removed, so we store that edge index.
The correctness relies on ensuring that no subtree ever exports more than two unresolved vertices upward, enforced implicitly by immediate grouping whenever possible.
