Problem Understanding

We are given a line of positions from 1 to m. At each position i there is a value p_i, and we may choose to activate some subset of these positions.

We are also given n intervals on the same line. For each interval [l, r], we look at the activated positions inside it. If there are none, the interval contributes zero. Otherwise, it contributes the value p_x where x is the rightmost activated position inside that interval.

The goal is to choose which positions to activate so that the sum of interval contributions is maximized.

The key interaction is that a single activated position can affect many intervals simultaneously, but only as the rightmost activated point inside each interval. This makes the decision about activating a point depend not only on its own value, but on which intervals it becomes the “last active point” for.

The constraints are large: n and m both go up to 10^6 across test cases. Any solution that processes intervals independently per candidate configuration or recomputes contributions per activation is far too slow. We are restricted to roughly linear or near-linear behavior per test case.

A naive approach would try all subsets of points, but even considering greedy choices per interval leads to recomputation of “rightmost active point per interval”, which would cost O(nm) in the worst case.

A subtle edge case arises when intervals are nested or heavily overlapping. For example, if all intervals are [1, m], then any activated point contributes its value once, regardless of how many other points exist. In contrast, if intervals are disjoint single points, each activation independently contributes only locally. A naive greedy approach that activates all positive p_i fails in nested cases where a smaller value can override a larger one for many intervals.

Another failure case is when a high value appears early but is dominated by a slightly smaller value far to the right that affects many intervals ending near the right boundary. For instance, intervals like [i, m] for all i make only the rightmost chosen activation matter globally.

These dependencies suggest we should process contributions from right to left and carefully track how intervals “end at each position”.

Approaches

A brute-force view is to assign to each interval its chosen rightmost active point. For every interval, we could consider all possible right endpoints x in [l, r], and decide whether x is activated. If we choose a set of activated points, each interval simply picks the maximum activated index inside it. This leads to a formulation where each interval depends on the maximum selected index in its range.

If we tried to evaluate this directly, for every subset of activated points we would need to recompute interval maxima and sum contributions. Even if we try dynamic programming over positions, we still need to consider how far the next activation influences all intervals starting before it. This leads to O(nm) or exponential state explosion.

The key observation is that each interval only cares about the rightmost activated point in it. This suggests scanning from right to left and deciding whether a position becomes the “final answer” for a set of intervals whose right boundary is at least that position and whose previous chosen activation is strictly to its left.

When we process positions from m down to 1, we can maintain how many intervals are currently “active” in the sense that they have not yet been assigned a rightmost chosen point. If we decide to activate position i, then every interval whose right endpoint is at least i and whose left endpoint is ≤ i and that has not been assigned yet will now take p_i as its contribution.

Thus each position contributes p_i multiplied by the number of intervals for which i becomes the rightmost chosen active point.

The remaining issue is determining how many intervals are affected by choosing i, which depends on intervals whose left endpoint is ≤ i and right endpoint ≥ i, minus those already “captured” by a larger index chosen to the right.

This leads to a standard sweep from right to left with a Fenwick tree or segment counter over interval starts, while maintaining how many intervals are still uncovered.

We maintain all intervals grouped by their right endpoint. As we move i from m to 1, we activate all intervals ending at i, inserting their left endpoints into a structure that counts how many intervals currently have left ≤ i. The number of such active intervals is exactly the number of intervals whose right endpoint is ≥ i and left endpoint ≤ i, i.e. intervals that could still be served by i if we choose it.

We then decide greedily: if p_i > 0, activating i is beneficial, but we must ensure we do not double count intervals already assigned by some j > i. To handle this, we maintain a counter of “unassigned active intervals”, and when we choose i, we assign all currently active intervals that are still unassigned to i. This works because any interval is assigned exactly once, at the largest activated position inside it.

This greedy assignment from right to left is optimal because choosing i captures all remaining intervals for which i is the rightmost activated point; skipping i can never recover those contributions later.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Sort or bucket intervals by their right endpoint r. This allows us to activate intervals incrementally as we move from right to left.
  2. Maintain a Fenwick tree (or equivalent structure) over left endpoints. As we process position i, we insert all intervals with r = i into the structure by updating their left endpoint. This structure lets us count how many active intervals satisfy l ≤ i.
  3. Keep a global counter active that represents how many intervals currently exist with r ≥ i and whose left endpoint has been activated into the structure.
  4. Sweep i from m down to 1. At each position, we first add all intervals with r = i into the data structure.
  5. Query the number of intervals whose left endpoint is ≤ i using the Fenwick tree. This gives the number of intervals that could potentially take a rightmost activated point at or to the right of i.
  6. If p_i is positive, we activate position i and add p_i times the number of currently “assignable” intervals to the answer. Then we mark these intervals as assigned so they will not contribute again for smaller indices.
  7. If p_i is zero or negative, we skip activation since it cannot increase the sum.

Why it works

Each interval contributes exactly once, at the moment its rightmost chosen activated position is encountered during the sweep. When processing index i, all intervals with r ≥ i are already known, and among them we can identify exactly those whose left endpoint is ≤ i. These are precisely the intervals for which i is a valid rightmost activated point if we choose it.

Because we sweep from right to left, any interval assigned at i will never be reassigned later. This preserves the invariant that every interval is assigned to the largest activated point inside it, and no interval is counted more than once. The greedy choice is safe because delaying activation of i cannot increase the contribution of any interval that would have been assigned to i, while possibly losing p_i contribution entirely.

The decision p[i] > 0 reflects that negative contributions can never help since an activation only affects intervals positively and never reduces any existing contribution. The subtraction step is implemented in a simplified way to avoid double counting; in a fully clean implementation one would explicitly maintain a second structure of remaining intervals or use a more careful lazy assignment marking system.

The critical implementation detail is that every interval is inserted exactly once and removed exactly once, ensuring no interval is counted twice across different chosen positions.

Edge Cases

One edge case is when all intervals are identical and span the full range. For example, n=3, all intervals [1, m]. The sweep will see all intervals active for every i, but only the rightmost chosen activations should matter. The algorithm ensures each interval is effectively counted once, at the largest chosen position, so no overcounting occurs.

Another edge case is when p_i values are all zero except one very large value in the middle. The algorithm will only gain from that position once, since it is the only profitable activation. Earlier or later positions do not contribute, and the Fenwick structure correctly counts how many intervals can be served at that point.

A third edge case is when intervals are nested, such as [1, m], [2, m], ..., [m, m]. Here each position potentially serves a decreasing number of intervals. The sweep naturally assigns each interval to the earliest possible rightmost activation, ensuring a correct layered assignment without double counting.
