A brute force strategy would explicitly construct every version of the array and compare every pair. For each pair, we would compute the number of distinct elements in the union. Even if we precompute sets, comparing two versions costs $O(n)$, and there are $O(m^2)$ pairs, leading to $O(m^2 n)$, far beyond limits.

The key observation is to stop thinking in terms of whole arrays and instead track each value independently over time.

Each value appears in exactly one position at any moment, but it may be replaced later. So every value has a contiguous “lifetime” over versions: it exists from the moment it is introduced until the moment it is overwritten.

Now consider a fixed value $x$. Suppose it exists in versions $[l, r]$. Then for any pair of versions $(i, j)$, it contributes to the intersection if and only if both versions contain $x$, meaning both $i$ and $j$ lie in $[l, r]$.

So each value contributes exactly the number of pairs of versions fully inside its lifetime interval, which is:

However, we are summing over all pairs, so for a value active in versions $[l, r]$, the number of pairs of versions where it is present in both is:

Why it works

Each value behaves independently because it is either present or absent in each version, and at any time it appears in exactly one position. Therefore, every value contributes exactly once per pair of versions where both endpoints lie in its lifetime interval. Summing over all values reconstructs the total intersection contribution across all array pairs without overlap or double counting.
