Approaches

A brute-force interpretation would be to consider every rectangle and decide independently whether to remove it or choose any subrectangle. For each rectangle, the number of possible subrectangles is proportional to its width times up to 2 choices of height configuration, and then we must ensure global disjointness. Trying all combinations is exponential in n and infeasible.

A slightly more structured brute force is to sort by left endpoint and attempt a greedy placement while maintaining all already used cells. But maintaining occupied cells over a coordinate range up to 1e9 requires either a segment tree or coordinate compression. Even then, trying all subsets or backtracking over choices is exponential.

The key insight is that because there are only two rows, each rectangle’s optimal contribution can be viewed as selecting a contiguous segment on row 1, row 2, or both, but never mixing arbitrarily within a row. This reduces the problem to selecting non-overlapping weighted segments on each row, plus handling rectangles that span both rows as “double-height” segments that block both rows simultaneously.

Instead of thinking in terms of arbitrary shrinking, we can assign each rectangle a candidate interval on either row 1 or row 2, or split it conceptually into two independent 1D interval scheduling problems with coupling constraints only through spanning rectangles.

The optimal strategy becomes a sweep over x-coordinates where we maintain the best achievable coverage for intervals ending at each point, using a greedy structure that always extends the last chosen segment in a row as far as possible.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We transform each rectangle into an interval over columns, carrying its allowed row options.

We then greedily assign each rectangle to the row that allows it to extend farthest without overlap.

Why it works

The key invariant is that at any point in the sweep, both rows are occupied only up to their respective end positions, and all placed rectangles are non-overlapping within each row.
