Another common pitfall is greedily comparing only individual strengths. Since sums of subsets matter, not individual comparisons, local dominance does not imply global dominance.
Approaches
The problem is fundamentally about constructing a binary tree over the set of players, where each internal node represents a split into two equal subsets, and only the stronger subset survives. Each player’s feasibility depends on whether we can embed them into a winning leaf of such a structure.
A brute-force approach would attempt to enumerate all possible ways to split the current set into two halves at every level and simulate all outcomes. At the top level there are $\binom{n}{n/2}$ splits, and this recurses for each surviving half. Even for $n = 16$, this already explodes into an unmanageable number of partitions, and for $n = 32$ it becomes completely infeasible.
The key observation is that we do not need to track full tournament structures. Instead, we only care about whether a subset of players can be reduced to a single winner that could be a specific target player. This suggests a subset dynamic programming perspective.
Fix a candidate winner $i$. We ask whether there exists a sequence of eliminations such that $i$ survives every round. In each round, the current set $S$ must be split into two equal-sized subsets $A$ and $B$, where the subset containing $i$ must have sum at least as large as the other subset (or strictly larger, or we can enforce win via tie-breaking). This means that as long as we can ensure the “home group” of $i$ is never strictly weaker than its opponent at any level, $i$ is viable.
This transforms the problem into a reachability problem over subsets: can we repeatedly merge pairs of subsets into a surviving subset containing $i$, ensuring that at each merge step there exists a pairing that does not overpower $i$’s side?
Since $n \le 32$, we can represent subsets as bitmasks and precompute their sums. Then for each target $i$, we run a DP over subsets containing $i$, checking whether we can reduce the full set to ${i}$ by repeatedly partitioning subsets into two equal halves where the side containing $i$ is not dominated.
The essential trick that makes this work is that we only need to know whether a subset can “survive as a block containing i”, not how it is structured internally. This allows merging smaller valid subsets into larger ones in a meet-in-the-middle style DP over subset partitions.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We fix a candidate player $i$ and check whether they can become the final winner.
- Precompute the sum of strengths for every subset using bitmask DP. This allows constant-time comparison of any group strength later, since we repeatedly compare partitions.
- Define a state $dp[mask]$ meaning that the subset represented by

- Process subsets in increasing order of size. This ordering is important because any valid reduction of a set must come from smaller intermediate subsets.

The reason we only require feasibility of such a split is that every tournament round is exactly such a partition, so every valid elimination history corresponds to a sequence of these valid merges.

Why it works
Every valid tournament corresponds to a binary tree whose leaves are players and whose internal nodes are partitions into equal-sized sets. The DP constructs exactly the set of subsets that can appear as the “winning side” of such a node containing $i$. Since every reduction step is modeled as merging two valid subtrees under a dominance constraint, any dp-reachable state corresponds to a realizable tournament structure, and any realizable tournament induces a valid dp construction. This gives a one-to-one correspondence between dp-reachability and feasibility of being the winner.
