Problem Understanding

We have a rooted tree with root at node 1.

Two chess pieces start at the root. Piece A must visit every node from a given set A, piece B must visit every node from another set B. The order is arbitrary. After all required visits are completed, both pieces must return to the root.

A move consists of moving exactly one piece across one tree edge. During the entire process, the distance between the two pieces is never allowed to exceed d.

The task is to find the minimum total number of moves.

The tree contains up to 2 · 10^5 vertices. Any solution that examines pairs of vertices, repeatedly runs graph searches, or performs work proportional to the size of a subtree for every node will be far too slow. With this input size, we should expect an O(n) or O(n log n) solution.

The subtle part is the distance restriction. Without it, the two pieces are completely independent. With it, a piece may be forced to enter a subtree even if it has no required vertex there, simply to stay close enough to the other piece.

Consider a path 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 with d = 2. Suppose piece A must visit node 4 and piece B only needs the root.

A naive approach might say that piece B never has to leave the root. That is impossible. When piece A reaches node 4, the distance from the root becomes 3, which exceeds d. Piece B must move down to node 2 while A explores the deeper part of the path. The distance constraint creates additional mandatory movement.

Another easy mistake is to assume that only required vertices matter. Suppose d = 2 and piece A must visit node 5 in a long chain. Even if piece B has no required vertex in that branch, it may still need to enter several intermediate vertices because A goes too deep. Those vertices contribute to the answer and cannot be ignored.

Approaches

A brute force view is to think of the full state of the system.

A state contains the position of both pieces and the set of required vertices already visited by each piece. We could run a shortest path search in this enormous state graph. The formulation is correct, but even for a tiny tree the number of states explodes. With up to 2 · 10^5 vertices, this is completely infeasible.

The key observation comes from looking at a single piece.

Suppose there were no distance restriction. Then a piece only needs to traverse the minimal rooted subtree connecting the root and all of its required vertices. Every edge of that subtree is traversed exactly twice, once going down and once coming back up.

Now reintroduce the distance limit.

Take some node u. Imagine that piece A has no required vertex inside the subtree of u. Normally A would never enter that subtree. The only reason A might still need to enter it is to accompany piece B when B explores a deep required vertex there.

How deep does B have to go before A is forced to help?

If the deepest B-required vertex inside u's subtree is at depth mxB, then when B reaches that vertex, A can remain at u only if

mxB - depth(u) ≤ d - 1.

Otherwise the distance would exceed d, so A must also enter through u.

This turns the problem into a purely local condition for every vertex.

For each node we need to know the deepest required vertex of each type inside its subtree. Once those depths are known, we can decide whether each piece must visit that node.

The final solution becomes a single DFS on the tree.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Root the tree at node 1 and compute the depth of every node.
  2. For every node u, maintain:

mxA[u] = maximum depth of any A-required vertex inside the subtree of u.

mxB[u] = maximum depth of any B-required vertex inside the subtree of u.

If no such vertex exists, the value is 0. 3. Compute these values with a postorder DFS.

If u itself belongs to set A, initialize mxA[u] = depth[u].

If u itself belongs to set B, initialize mxB[u] = depth[u].

Then merge information from the children by taking maximums. 4. Start from the hypothetical situation where both pieces must visit every non-root vertex.

Every tree edge would then be traversed twice by each piece.

The initial answer is

4 · (n - 1). 5. Decide whether piece A actually needs node u.

Piece A must visit u if either:

  • there is an A-required vertex in its subtree, meaning mxA[u] > 0, or
  • piece B has a required vertex deeper than distance d - 1 below u, meaning

mxB[u] - depth[u] >= d.

If neither condition holds, A never needs to enter through u.

In that case we remove the round-trip cost of A on the edge from u to its parent, subtracting 2 from the answer. 6. Apply the symmetric rule for piece B.

mxB[u] == 0

and

mxA[u] - depth[u] < d

then B does not need node u, so subtract another 2. 7. Process every non-root node this way. The remaining value is the minimum number of moves.

Why it works

For a piece to traverse an edge into a subtree, there must be a reason.

The first possible reason is obvious: the subtree contains one of its own required vertices.

The second reason comes from the distance restriction. If the other piece must reach a required vertex at least d levels below the current node, staying outside the subtree would violate the maximum allowed distance. Entering through that node becomes mandatory.

These are the only two reasons a piece ever needs to cross an edge.

Starting from the assumption that both pieces traverse every edge twice counts every possible traversal. For each piece and each node, we remove exactly those traversals that are never required. The DFS computes precisely which nodes remain necessary, so the resulting total is optimal.

The DFS computes three pieces of information simultaneously.

The depth array gives distances from the root. The arrays mxA and mxB store the deepest required vertex of each type inside every subtree.

The initial answer assumes that each piece performs a complete DFS tour of the whole tree. That costs 2(n - 1) moves per piece, hence 4(n - 1) in total.

After processing a subtree, we know whether a piece has any reason to enter it. If not, we remove exactly one round trip across the edge connecting that subtree to its parent. A round trip contributes 2 moves, which explains the subtraction.

The root is treated separately because it has no parent edge. Subtracting for the root would incorrectly remove nonexistent movement.

All arithmetic easily fits in Python integers. The largest possible answer is 4(n - 1), which is below one million.

The final answer is 6 after accounting for only the necessary traversals. The first piece visits node 3, the second visits node 4, and neither needs to enter the other's branch.
