Problem Understanding
We are given an undirected connected graph where all people start at vertex 1. Each friend has a destination vertex they must eventually reach. Among these friends, some subset of size at most 6 are “special” in the sense that they have no car. Everyone else may have a car.
A friend with a car can pick up any number of the no-car friends, but only under a strict constraint: the car owner drives along some shortest path from vertex 1 to their own destination, and every no-car friend they pick up must lie on that exact shortest-path route in a compatible way. In other words, a car defines a single shortest route from 1 to its destination, and all passengers must be located along vertices that the car passes through on that route.
The task is to minimize how many friends without cars are forced to walk alone. Equivalently, we want to maximize how many of the k special friends can be assigned to car owners such that each car owner’s shortest path can “cover” all assigned passengers.
The structure of the problem becomes tight because k is at most 6. This immediately implies that exponential solutions over subsets of the special friends are feasible, since 2^6 is only 64. However, the graph itself and the number of friends f can be large, up to 10^4 per test case, so any solution must compress the graph information heavily and avoid per-pair shortest path recomputation.
A naive failure case appears when we try to greedily assign each no-car friend to the closest car owner. This breaks when two no-car friends are individually compatible with different cars but cannot be served together due to shortest-path divergence. For example, if two required vertices lie on different branches of every shortest path to a given car’s destination, greedy assignment may incorrectly assume both can ride together.
Another subtle issue is assuming that “being on a shortest path from 1 to h_i” is equivalent to simple distance comparison alone. Two vertices may satisfy distance constraints independently but not lie together on a single shortest path tree route, which invalidates grouping.
Approaches
A brute-force viewpoint starts by focusing only on the k special friends. For each special friend, we try to assign them to some friend with a car. For a fixed car owner, we must decide which subset of special friends they can carry. This depends on whether all chosen special vertices lie on a single shortest path from 1 to that car’s destination.
If we precompute shortest distances from every relevant car destination, we can check whether a vertex lies on a shortest path to that destination using the standard condition: a vertex v lies on some shortest path from 1 to h if and only if dist1[v] + dist[v][h] equals dist1[h]. However, the graph is large, and computing dist[v][h] for all pairs is impossible.
The key observation is that k is extremely small, so we can reverse the perspective. Instead of checking each car against subsets of passengers independently in a large state space, we precompute all pairwise relationships among the k special vertices with respect to each potential car destination.
For every friend (potential car owner), we precompute shortest distances from their destination to all vertices. Then for each special vertex, we can test whether it lies on a shortest path from 1 to that destination using a single comparison. This converts the problem into a compatibility mask: for each car owner, we compute a k-bit mask describing which special friends they can carry.
Now the problem becomes selecting a subset of car owners such that every special friend is covered by at least one chosen mask, minimizing uncovered elements. This is a classic DP over subsets of size k.
We define dp[mask] as the minimum number of car owners needed to cover exactly the subset mask of special friends. Each car contributes a mask, and we perform a subset DP over up to 2^k states.
The brute-force idea would attempt to assign subsets directly per car without preprocessing masks, leading to repeated graph checks. That leads to roughly O(f * 2^k * (n + m)) which is too slow. The optimized version reduces graph work to O(f * (n + m)) via BFS and then compresses selection into O(f * 2^k).

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first fix the k special friends and treat them as indices 0 to k-1.
- Run a BFS from vertex 1 to compute dist1[v] for all vertices. This gives shortest distances from the starting point to every node.
- For each friend i in the input list, we need shortest distances from h_i to all vertices. Instead of doing this for all f individually and storing full arrays, we process each friend with a BFS when needed.
- For each friend i, we determine a bitmask over the k special friends. For each special friend p_j located at vertex x_j, we check whether x_j lies on some shortest path from 1 to h_i by verifying:
dist1[x_j] + dist_i[x_j] == dist1[h_i].
If true, we set bit j in the mask of friend i. 4. We only care about masks for friends who have cars. For no-car friends, their contribution is irrelevant as they cannot serve others. 5. We now solve a subset DP where we want to cover all k bits using minimal number of masks. We initialize dp[0] = 0 and all other states as infinity. 6. For each car owner mask m, we update dp in reverse subset order: for every state s, we set dp[s | m] = min(dp[s | m], dp[s] + 1). 7. The answer is dp[(1 << k) - 1], representing full coverage of all no-car friends.
The key structural reason this works is that every car corresponds to a single fixed coverage pattern over the k special vertices. Once these patterns are known, the graph disappears and the problem becomes a pure set-cover optimization over a universe of size at most 6.
Why it works
Shortest path structure guarantees that membership of a vertex on a valid route to a destination can be tested independently using distance additivity. This converts each car into a deterministic subset of usable passengers. Since k is small, all interactions among special friends are fully captured by subset masks, and the DP explores all ways to combine these independent coverings without missing any interaction pattern.

The DP loop iterates over 2^k states, and k is at most 6, so this is constant-factor work. The only subtle implementation detail is iterating DP states backwards to avoid reusing a mask multiple times in a single transition step.
