When both players act optimally, they essentially try to match cards in descending order. Each strong card either finds a stronger opponent response or becomes decisive.
We can reinterpret the process as pairing cards in decreasing order: whenever both players have available cards, the highest remaining cards interact if possible. Algorithm Walkthrough
We process cards in increasing order of value, from 1 to n, and build a DP that tracks how many cards of each player have been assigned among the largest processed prefix.
We define a state where we have already distributed some prefix of numbers and keep track of how many cards Alex currently holds among these and how many Boris holds among them. The remaining undecided structure is equivalent to placing parentheses that encode who receives each card.
The core idea is that only the relative surplus of strong cards matters. For any prefix, if Alex has too many large cards compared to Boris, he gains guaranteed winning power in later forced comparisons. If Boris dominates similarly, Alex is at risk of losing.
We encode DP as dp[i][j], where i is how many cards we have processed, and j is how many of them were assigned to Alex. Since total assigned to Boris is i - j, we can reconstruct the balance.
At each step i+1, we assign card i+1 either to Alex or Boris, updating the DP. However, the transition is weighted by whether this assignment creates a configuration where eventual forced responses become asymmetric. The subtle point is that only the final balance matters, so all intermediate states contribute equally, but final classification depends on whether the maximum prefix advantage crosses zero.
After building dp up to n, we classify each final split by simulating the effective greedy matching of largest cards: we scan from n downwards, maintaining a balance counter. Whenever Alex has a card, we increase balance; when Boris has a card, we decrease it. The first time balance becomes strictly positive or strictly negative determines the winner; if it never does and ends at zero, it is a draw.

Why it works
