Problem Understanding
We are given an array of integers, and we are allowed to pick a single contiguous segment inside it, but not the whole array. Once we choose this segment, the array is conceptually split into two parts: the chosen segment and everything outside it.
The score of a chosen segment is built from two independent measurements. On the outside part, we take its maximum minus its minimum. On the chosen segment, we also take its maximum minus its minimum. The final value is the sum of these two ranges.
So every choice of a segment changes both parts at once: when we expand the segment, we gain elements inside it and lose elements from the outside, and both ranges shift.
The input size pushes us away from quadratic ideas. Each test can have up to 100,000 elements total across all tests. Any approach that tries all segments explicitly, or recomputes min and max for each segment, will time out because there are O(n²) possible segments and even O(n) work per segment is too slow.
A subtle edge case appears when all elements are equal. Every range becomes zero, and any segment gives score zero. A naive solution that forgets the “proper subsegment” constraint might accidentally include the full array and still output zero, which is fine here but can hide mistakes in logic. Another tricky situation is when extremes are concentrated in a small region, because the optimal segment often isolates those extremes rather than spreading them.
Approaches
The brute-force approach is straightforward. We try every pair of indices l and r, compute the maximum and minimum inside the segment and outside the segment, and evaluate the score. This is correct because it directly follows the definition. The problem is the cost: there are O(n²) segments, and recomputing min and max for each segment costs O(n), leading to O(n³) per test case in the worst form, or O(n²) if optimized with prefix preprocessing for inside but still O(n) for outside updates. With n up to 10⁵, this is impossible.
The key observation is that the score depends only on how the global maximum and minimum values are distributed between the chosen segment and its complement. Instead of thinking about arbitrary segments, we realize that only elements equal to the global minimum or global maximum matter in deciding where the best cut happens. Everything else is irrelevant for the extreme ranges unless it affects which side contains these extremes.
This reduces the problem to a structural decision: we are essentially deciding whether to place global extremes inside the segment or outside it. Once this perspective is adopted, the optimal segment can always be chosen so that it isolates occurrences of extreme values, and we only need to consider a small number of candidate segments around those positions.
We precompute prefix and suffix minimums and maximums so that we can evaluate any split in O(1), then try only meaningful boundaries formed by positions of minimum and maximum elements. The optimal answer comes from considering segments that start or end at occurrences of these extreme values, because shifting a boundary across non-extreme elements does not change either range in a way that can improve the result.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Compute the global minimum and global maximum of the entire array. These values determine the upper bound of any possible range contribution.
- Record all positions where the minimum appears and all positions where the maximum appears. These positions are the only places where the structure of the optimal segment can change meaningfully.
- Precompute prefix minimum and prefix maximum arrays. This allows us to query the range of any prefix or suffix in constant time, which is necessary for evaluating outside segments quickly.
- Precompute suffix minimum and suffix maximum arrays for the same reason, but in the opposite direction. This gives constant-time access to ranges after a cut.
- For each candidate boundary derived from extreme positions, compute the best segment that starts or ends there and evaluate the resulting score using precomputed arrays.
- Track the maximum score across all candidates.
The reasoning behind focusing only on extreme positions is that moving a boundary inside a region where no global minimum or maximum occurs does not change whether those extremes are inside or outside the segment. Since the score depends on ranges defined by extremes, such movements cannot create a better configuration.
Why it works
The value of any segment depends only on whether the global minimum and maximum lie inside or outside the chosen segment, because those elements dominate both range expressions. Any segment that does not change the placement of these extreme elements across the boundary is equivalent in terms of contribution structure. Therefore, an optimal segment can always be adjusted so that its endpoints align with occurrences of the global minimum or maximum without decreasing the score, which reduces the search space to O(n) candidates.
