For each query, we conceptually add a complete graph over these leaves, but only among pairs where the second endpoint is larger in label, and every such added edge has weight equal to the query value.

After adding these edges, we are asked for the diameter of the resulting graph, meaning the maximum shortest-path distance between any two vertices when both the original tree edges and the new leaf-to-leaf edges are available.

The core difficulty is that each query changes only the weight of the added complete graph over leaves, not its structure. So we are repeatedly asking: how does the diameter change when all leaves become pairwise connected with a uniform edge weight?

The input size reaches up to one million vertices and up to ten queries. A direct recomputation per query is impossible, since even a single all-pairs shortest path computation is far too large. Any solution that even touches all leaf pairs explicitly will fail because the number of leaves can be linear in n, making the added edges quadratic.

A naive mistake is to assume the diameter is always either the original tree diameter or simply twice the maximum depth plus the added edge weight. This breaks when the diameter path uses one leaf-to-leaf shortcut internally rather than at endpoints. For example, in a star-shaped tree, all leaves become directly connected after augmentation, collapsing the diameter to the query weight, while the original diameter is 2. A naive “max of two candidates” approach fails to account for mixed paths that go partially through the tree and partially through added edges.

The key challenge is to understand how shortest paths behave when a complete graph is added over all leaves with uniform edge weight.

Approaches

A brute force approach would build the augmented graph for each query and run a multi-source BFS or Dijkstra from every node, or at least compute all-pairs shortest paths restricted to a subset. This immediately becomes infeasible: if there are L leaves, adding all L(L−1)/2 edges per query already requires quadratic time and memory. Even ignoring construction, recomputing distances is O(n + m) per source, which is impossible for n up to 10^6.

The crucial observation is that the added structure is extremely symmetric. All leaves are connected with identical weights, so in shortest paths, we never need to traverse more than one added leaf-edge in a meaningful way. Any path that uses multiple leaf-to-leaf edges can be compressed into a path that goes from a leaf into the tree, possibly reaches another leaf, and optionally uses a single shortcut.

This reduces the problem into understanding three quantities in the original tree: the diameter endpoints, and distances from all nodes to the nearest leaf, plus the distances between leaves inside the original tree. Once we characterize these, we can express the new diameter as a small number of candidate values involving the original diameter and the best “detour” via leaf edges.

We compute the tree diameter endpoints using two DFS passes. Then we root the tree and compute for every node its distance to the closest leaf. We also compute for every node its maximum distance to any node in the tree, which is its eccentricity. The effect of adding leaf edges is that any pair of leaves u and v now has a direct edge of weight x, so their distance becomes min(tree_distance(u,v), x). For non-leaf endpoints, shortest paths may go via a leaf shortcut into another subtree, so the optimal diameter can be formed by combining farthest points whose paths are “pulled” toward leaves.

After reinterpreting the problem this way, the diameter can be expressed as the maximum of two terms: the original tree diameter, and a term that depends on x and the two deepest leaf-rooted branches, effectively capturing a path that goes leaf → leaf → deepest subtree endpoint.

The only remaining challenge is computing the necessary tree statistics efficiently once, then answering each query in O(1).

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Root the tree arbitrarily at node 1 and run a DFS to compute parent relationships and depths. This gives a baseline for all distance computations in the tree.
  2. Compute the tree diameter using two DFS/BFS passes. First find the farthest node from an arbitrary start, then run again from that node to get the opposite endpoint. This yields the original diameter length D. The reason this works is that in a tree, the farthest node from any node must lie on a diameter endpoint.
  3. Identify all leaves by checking degree equals one. These nodes define the set L that will later become fully connected under query edges.
  4. Compute, for every node, its maximum distance to any other node in the tree. This is done by two DFS passes that propagate best downward and upward contributions. This value captures how far each node can “reach” inside the tree structure.
  5. Compute, for every node, its distance to the nearest leaf using a multi-source BFS starting from all leaves. This tells us how far any node is from being able to use a shortcut edge immediately.
  6. From the computed arrays, extract two key global values: the largest downward branch ending at a leaf, and the second largest such branch. These represent the longest and second longest leaf-rooted “arms” in the tree.
  7. For each query value x, compute the candidate diameter formed by using a leaf-to-leaf edge as a bridge between two deep branches. This candidate becomes something of the form best_arm1 + best_arm2 + x.
  8. The answer for each query is the maximum between the original tree diameter D and this leaf-bridge expression.

Why it works

Every shortest path in the augmented graph can be transformed into a form that uses at most one leaf-to-leaf edge. If more than one such edge is used, the path can be shortened by replacing the intermediate leaf chain with a direct leaf edge due to uniform weights. This reduces all optimal paths to either purely tree-based paths (already captured by the diameter D), or a structure where two tree branches are connected through a single leaf shortcut. The preprocessing computes the best possible endpoints for such branches, ensuring no candidate diameter is missed.

The solution begins by constructing the adjacency list and tracking degrees to identify leaves. The diameter computation uses the standard two-BFS method, producing both endpoints and the diameter length.

A multi-source BFS from all leaves computes distances to the nearest leaf, which is essential because any shortcut edge originates from a leaf. The remaining logic reduces the effect of query edges into a global best pair of leaf-anchored branches.

Finally, each query is answered in constant time by comparing the original diameter with the best achievable “leaf-bridged” path.
